Great for horses too.
I may change my review as time goes on, as I've only had it up for about a week. I don't know how it will last, but it sure seems like it will. This thing is GREAT. I have a horse that I needed to keep off the pasture so the grass would grow and I can't quite afford (nor do I want to) to fence the whole back area by the barn. So I set up an electric fence. I have a tight budget, and this definitely fit it. I was worried, however, that it wouldn't be powerful enough for him to feel the shock. BOY was I wrong. I set it up, and within five minutes he touched his nose to the fence, jumped in the air, and bolted. He now stands at least a foot away. He won't even go near it. I would have to say this is definitely a good purchase for someone on a tight budget and someone who has a small pasture to manage. And it for sure works well for large animals. Only time will tell how it will hold up.UPDATE:Maybe not as strong as I think. My Mother-In-Law can stand and hold the wire and feel the current, but it doesn't phase her. HOWEVER if my Husband touches it, he jumps and yelps. So maybe I just have a super human Mother-In-Law. It still keeps my horse out of places I don't want him and he keeps his distance. I recently bought a miniature horse and I set up the wire along the inside of her pen to keep her from leaning and rubbing on the flimsy fence, and it keeps her off as well. So I don't know for sure how to rate this. I took a star off of my 5 star review because of my Mother-In-Law (who so far seems to be the only thing not affected by it), but it does what I bought it for, so I think 4 stars is sufficient. If you have a pretty high strung, mischievous large animal, this may not work so well. But for one who respects boundaries, I would still suggest this. I refuse to touch it myself to see for sure ;)

The defense has won...
The jury is still out on this unit. When I first unpacked it and set it up per the instructions, it didn't work. The instructions directed connecting the leads to the battery. In my unit the battery was already connected which was suspicious. I put the unit in full sun for seven days (instructions called for five days), switched off per the instruction. When I hooked it up and turned it on, it didn't work. I tested the little lead acid battery and found that it was well below the specified voltage. I reported it to Amazon and, since it was non-returnable, they promptly refunded my money.. I decided that since it was basically a throwaway piece, I would experiment with it. I cleaned the battery contacts carefully then put it back in the sun for several days. When I hooked it up and turned it in, it worked for a few hours. So, I followed the charge instructions and hooked it up again. For awhile it would not operate all night, but after a few days of turning it off during the day and leaving it on at night, it was still working in the morning.Since then I have generally left it on and it seems to be working as described. If I don't have any more problems for a while, I'll edit this review to add one or two stars as it is a nice compact unit. with good instructions (and it's $25 less than the same unit in a local farm store). After succeeding in getting the unit's battery properly charged I found that it has worked satisfactorily all summer. It is not a strong shock and it's hard to tell whether it's working or not as it doesn't make any sound and the pulse indicator light is very hard to see. However, I found that it does shock any grounded body and it will burn grass or weeds that happen to grow against the wire. So, I have added two stars to my review.

It’s very weak.
I have this around my garden and it’s very weak. I can grab the wires in my hand and hold them with very little discomfort. I read other reviews saying it requires a good grounding system, so I increase from one ground rod to a two rod series system and still same results.

Almost but not quite
It's an OK product for my horses who are well trained to electric fencing but it does not store a charge well if you have a day of overcast clouds or rain. Then it doesn't produce any jolt at all. Good thing my horses assume the fence is on all the time. Not suitable for younger, more rambunctious horses or horses that have learned to test the fence. Definitely not suitable for cattle.

great charger
Using this around our garden to keep animals out, puts out just enough amp to scare them away. We do have it on a larger area also. But works great for what we needed.

very light shocking
did not make the wire hot enough to keep the animals away. I did charge it for the 3 days before using.
