使用するツールから、木製で出来たキャリーイーゼルカメラ、修正液・筆・カッターナイフ、ティシュ・絵具水が準備されている。自画像の作品で左の窓から柔らかい光が入って、服、バック、カーテンとの構成が良い。コンポジションでは、紙に縦横3等分して、クロスしたポイントに重要なポイントを持ってくる様に計算している。何気なく描かれているが、視点の移動がスムースにしている。顔・人体の比率、ポーズ、光と影、背景にどんなものを持って来るか色々工夫してある。スッチングも豊富で、全身、顔、群像等が描かれている。写真から鉛筆、チャコールでの制作した作品もある。水彩画での使用方法、暖色・寒色・コントラストトーン、色を選択する等、多岐にわたる。写真を利用してる作品もあるが、無機的な感じは無く色彩・構図上手く作品化している。水彩での制作プロセスもあり参考になる。

This book is just awful! I am a professional artist and hoped I would learn some different techniques. I was wrong! The artist goes into too much detail about which specific brush to use and when. That is not my biggest gripe, this man can’t draw!!! His work is very amateurish. His very best portrait is on the cover but from then on, things go rapidly downhill! Don’t waste your money!

Somewhere there is someone declaring himself to be a professional artist who comments that David Thomas is not a very good artist. This is nonsense. The cover picture is not just good its exceptional showing that watercolours can be close to super realism the other pictures are in the more mainstream watercolour tradition of being more abstracted. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them they all serve their purpose.
