Victory At Sea - Volumes 1, 2 & 3 ORIGINAL RECORDINGS REMASTERED SET

I am really torn between giving this 5 stars and a lower rating. I agree with the reviewer that said the dynamic quality of the CD does not match that of the original stereophonic LP's. However, the CD does have all of the original tracks from Volumes 1 thru 3 with Volumes 1 and 2 being the best of the three. I never was a fan of Volume 3 as it is full of poor quality bombastic sound effects, and is no where near the symphonic originality of the first two Volumes which rate a full 5 stars. I bought the original LP pressings of Volumes 1 and 2 around 1966 and lost them in the early 70's and just recently was able to find the RCA Living Stereo LP disks on Amazon. I plan on transferring these onto CD format to see if the original dynamics will be duplicated. At any rate, if you are a fan of the Victory at Sea Series and the sound track do not hesitate to purchase this two CD collection of the original three volumes. The first CD and initial four tracks of the second are fantastic which comprise the original Volumes One and Two of the suite.

I saw some reviews knocking the quality, but: I found this an exceptional reproduction of the original recordings. Now to be clear-- I have excellent equipment, starting with a 1970s 2500W. Yamaha Stereo and 150W. Klipsch speakers that could blow your roof off. So after I adjusted the bass and balance, the CD provided very clear and perfect sound. I had not heard "Victory At Sea" since I was a teenager, and this brought it all back; the horrible conflict, the trying and desperate times of WWII when our finest gave their finest. Goosebumps performance. Use good equipment correctly, and you get great sound.

This is is just like the vinyl record in quality and especially in reproduction of the sound effects. I think I have all the prior CD's and this is the one to get ! Excellent sound quality !

As a child, I would lie on the rug in front of the old stereo listening to this on a 33 record. It was one of my Dad's favorites, and it turned into one of mine. I lost my original set, so I bought this to replace it. It brings back so many wonderful memories.

For my father, uncle and father-in-law, World War II was the defining event of their lives. Like many people my age, I grew up watching the Victory at Sea documentary on television every year, at my Grandmother’s house with my cousins. We didn’t have a TV. This CD faithfully reproduces the lush, evocative music, which is engraved in my memory.Now my son and his wife are Navy physicians. I play this music for my grandchildren.

First, I never cared for Vol 3 from the day I first heard it at the record shop (yes folks, there used to be records shops). I wish a volume was available without the additions which, in my opinion, ruin it. The remastering on Disk 1 is pretty good. As noted by one of the other reviewers, we don't know where the source material came from. But with my headphones on, it sounds pretty damn good. All in all, for us who had the serious turntables with vacuum tube pre-amps pounding out the Red Seal recordings into sand loaded Wharfedale speakers, it'll do until something better comes along. Hopefully before I cash in!

imo The music for Victory at Sea is as great a piece of music as has ever been written for any film, including greats such as Jaws, Star Wars, and the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly to name just a few.

I still have the original 1959 vinyl LPs of these, but no longer have a deck to play them on. When I found these on CD on Amazon, it was a "must buy", and I have to say the transfer has worked very well. A crisp sound, and I am really pleased that they left the sound effects in from volume 3. Great recording!!!

Excellent, and a good reminder of viewing the original series in the early 50s. The orchestra is obviously first class and as the recording is in stereo it's not the TV soundtrack ; weirdly, there is no mention on the CD packaging of orchestra or conductor.
