An unusual badge, since it names the territorial jurisdiction. Most U.S. Marshal badges omit this. The first U.S. Marshal for the Arizona Territory was Milton Duffield, a tall man, quite a shootist, and a bit on the overbearing side. Once, in court, he was asked to surrender his weapons. In a flash, he had one pistol out and pointed at the judge and another pointed at the baliff. He backed out of the courtroom this way. At another time a friend asked him how many weapons he had on him. Duffield produced eleven revolvers and one Bowie knife, all from concealment on his person. This badge is a very early type star, the type his deputies wore. Duffield was appointed U.S. Marshal for Arizona by President Lincoln.
