Great multipurpose knife
This is a weird and unusual knife. I use it for sandwiches, cutting cooked chicken, pork, and steak. It is also great for cutting breast and even thinly slicing crescent rolls. I assembled my own set that includes this one, a 7" santuko, and two 4" pairing knifes. This small set really covers everything.

The BEST Value in Ultra-Premium Knives. Here's why:
One of the most useful knifes on the planet. And the Shun Premier tend to be the best value in this price range. Because it has the better steel, more layers, AND is hand hammered- other high end knives with these same features typically cost a ton more- even from Shun! Which makes the Premier line the best value. This line has all of the relevant upgrades you need, at the lowest price compared to the other super premium lines. The reason these features are important is because these knives hold their edges and stay sharper way way way longer than the Shun Classic or other lines with lower steels, and that are not hand hammered. Hammering the knife before sharpening it pounds the steel to make it incredibly dense and strong, so it holds an edge much better and stays sharper longer. But it's expensive to do because it's pure hand labor. The hand craftsmanship does give the product a lot of "soul" too. At least for me, there's always something cooler about a hand crafted product made with thought by a human being, compared to something stamped out by a machine. And anything you prepare with soul always tastes better! We have this, and the Premier 6' chef knife which is the perfect size and is awesome, and their 4" Premier Pairing knife, whihc is a great tool too because it's wider than a normal pairing knife so a lot more utilitarian. PS- You can hang these on your wall as art when you're not using them, they are that beautiful.

Shockingly useful!
I kind of bought this on a whim to complete my Shun collection. And really wasn’t sure if it would be a waste or useless or not. It’s significantly bigger than I’d thought it would be and has more weight to it than most Shun blades.I wasn’t sure what to expect, the description and most reviewers describe it as being something akin to a butter knife to make sandwiches with… it is not. First of all it is VERY sharp despite the wavy serrated edge. It’s also incredibly useful at almost every task other than fine chopping. I am dumbfounded that people claim it’s useful for buttering bread. I use it for almost all slicing tasks where I don’t want the total precision of the chef’s knife. It can still do some fun work that I normally would use a pairing knife on too. It doesn’t look like it would be, but it’s one of the most versatile knives I’ve ever had in the kitchen. I honestly wish I had not spent the money on my santuko as this has completely replaced it and does it’s job better, imho.

Couldn't be happier
I absolutely love this knife. It is truly a utility knife as I use it on a number of things. What I really love is making sandwiches. You can butter the bread, add condiments and lastly slice the sandwich. You don't need to press down on the sandwich it just slides thru like slicing butter. It is invaluable slicing any veggies you need to add to say egg salad or salmon salad filling for the sandwich. It truly can do almost anything. Be careful using it though as it is very sharp!

Fabulous!
Love this knife. All purpose, cuts, slices, spreads and just all around makes for a great sandwich knife. Must be great - even my husband prefers this knife! Wish I had given in to my urge to buy this years ago!
