The Outriders [Remaster]

One of McCrea's best
I consider this one of Joel McCrea's best. It is a straight, true western of the '50's in the grand epic tradition. Three Rebs escape from prison, join a group of Southern raiders and take on the job of stealing gold from a secret Northern wagon train heading east. There is plenty going on in this western which gives it that epic feel. Arlene Dahl is radiant, especially during the dance-around-the-campfire scene. How she puts Joel in his place is something. Barry Sullivan has never been more robust. His actions during the river crossing are fun to watch. The river crossing itself doesn't have any tragedy but is one of the more compelling I've seen in westerns. Sullivan shows us how to do it by drawing in the dirt, and they do it - for real. I love stuff like that. There's plenty of action, human drama, and travelling through western lands. It's all good.

Joel McCrea- The Outriders- Different and good western.
This western takes place at the end of the civil war as Joel, Barry Sullivan and James Whitmore are confederate escaped prisoners who join and escort a wagon train with union gold in order to steal it for the confederacy. But Joel changes his mind partly due to the presence of the beautiful Arlene Dahl and hearing of the end of the war. He turns against his former pal Barry ( one of Sullivan's most evil roles) and saves the wagon train and gold from the evil rebels who only want to keep it for themselves in any case. This is a well paced story with plenty of movement and action and a great scene of a crossing of a rapids river. Reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is something wrong with the sound track. When there is talking and you have sound set just right its fine. But when the music plays the sound becomes to loud and a little distorted and you have to lower it and put it back up when there is talking. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Being a Joel Mcrea fan is imperative.
If you like Joel Mcrea, You will like this one. I am finding that a lot of his movies are "unavailable" for reasons unknown. I have been trying to get hold of "Saddle Tramp" but it is always unavailable. I am hoping sometime it will become available to the public. Enjoy this movie. I did.

Pretty good movie
The Outriders was a pretty good movie. My biggest complaint is that whenever Warner Bros. does these "remaster" movies they NEVER add subtitles. I don't have cable or satellite and my newer TV won't allow me to watch closed captioned without it, so I have no idea if there is closed captioned or not (I doubt it). It has a really good cast and you can't go wrong with Joel McCrea. The movie was filmed in and around Kanab, Utah so the scenery is great. (Kanab celebrates their western filming heritage - Western Legends Roundup - every August. Joel McCrea filmed at least a half dozen movies there.)

BAD
Can't believe one of my favorite cowboy stars Joel McCrae made this movie. The female stars character was useless to the story and the chick was terrible. The story overall was really bad.

THE OUTRIDERS
This movie was first released in 1950(2011), in rich technicolor and full screen 1.33.1 and runs 93 minutes. The sound and picture quality are excellent. The only extra is a very good trailor. The film starts at CAMP BENTON, Missouri, a Union prison stockade in the last year of the war between the states. The Reb prisoners are taken to have a bath in the lake, as there was smallpox about. Sergeant Will Owens(JOEL McCREA), Jessie Wallace(BARRY SULLIVAN) and Clint Priest(JAMES WHITMORE) escape after killing a soldier. News spreads fast and the Yank army chases them. But the 3 are captured by renegade Rebs lead by Keeley(JEFF COREY) and taken to their camp. Keeley says that there was $ 1 million in gold being shipped from Santa Fe in wagons with armed guard, going to St Luis, hidden under the freight. Keeley wants the gold for the confederates. Owen, Wallace and Priest join the wagons as 'the outriders'. They ask to join the caravan, but are refused. But they follow the wagons. The gold must be in one of the wagons. Later the Apache attack the wagon train, and Owen and friends chase them away. So they are asked to join the Wagon train for protection and Owen says he knows the country and can guide them to safety. Mrs Jan Gort(ARLENE DAHL) is also travelling with the wagons with her brother in law - Roy. After crossing the Apache country, they enter the Pornie country, the chief of which demands their horses. Then they come to a very chopy river, which they must cross. How will it end? Will they reach St Luis? Can the wagons cross the river? Can the Outriders protect the wagon train? What will happen to the gold? Can Owen, Wallace and Priest stick together? This excellent story by IRVING RAVETCH is beautifully photographed in rich technicolor by CHARLES SCHOENBAUM and briskly directed by ROY ROWLAND. Joel McCrea, James Whitmore and Barry Sullivan give tough performances.JOEL ALBERT McCREA was born on 5.11.1905 in South Pasadena, California. After school, he acted on stage and took courses in drama. In 1927/28, he worked as extras and stunt man. In 1929, he signed contract with MGM and in 1930, he moved to RKO. In 1940, his career peaked. He enjoyed doing westerns. His last film was in 1976 -'Mustang Country'. He worked with his son JODY in some films. He married FRANCES DEE in 1933 and had 3 sons, David, Peter and Jody. He was proud of his scottish heritage. Even in 1940's, he was a multi-millionaire with land and his real-estate dealings. He made his final public appearance on 3.10.1990. On 20.10.1990, aged 84, he died in Woodland Hills, California, of pneumonia. Some of Joel McCrea's westerns are:-(1) San Franscisco Story, 1952(2009)(2) Stranger on Horse, 1955(2005)(3) The Gunfight in Dodge City, 1959(2008)(4) Colorado Territory, 1949(2009)(5) Four Faces West, 1948(2003)(6) Wichita, 1955(2009)(7) Ride The High Country, 1962(2009)(8) The First Texan, 1956(2009)(9) Fort Massacre, 1958(2011)(10)Buffalo Bill, 1944(2005)(11)The Oklahoman, 1957(2009)(12)Stars in My Crown, 1950(2011)watch and ENJOY.
