I used this to repair a stripped bolt on the recoil (bottom bolt) for my Stihl BR 600 back back blower. It worked great, so I decided to just do the same on the other two recoil bolts. All three bolts went into an aluminum block. I now have three inserts that are stronger than the original. Just select the correct drill bit and slowly drill out the stripped threads. Use cutting oil but if not, you can use penetrating oil, WD-40 etc. Idea is to have a lubricant while you drill. Make sure you have the drill bit perpendicular to the hole. Once done, I cleaned the debris out of the hole. Then, use the correct tap. It does not come with a tap handle so you need to have one or purchase one. In my case, I inserted the tap into my drill (not conventional), put it on low speed, and the lowest torque setting. A tap handle would not have fit. Again, lubricate the tap with cutting oil, WD-40, etc. My drill has variable speed so was not a problem to drill slowly. I adjusted the torque up a few clicks and then was done. Goal is to go slowly- don't be in a hurry. You don't want to be drilling out a broken tap. Insert the matching helicoil thread repair, and then use the tool to break off the center tang so you can insert your bolts. Then, you are done. The drill bit and tap show absolutely no signs of use. Of course, I only used it three times. For aluminum blocks (most car engines, and many small engines), this should be fine since aluminum is a soft metal. For older steel engine blocks, not sure how it would fare long term? If you use plenty of lubricant and proceed slowly, it should probably be okay. This would probably not be a set you use daily in the shop but for a homeowner who needs to rethread a stripped hole occasionally, it's worth the price vs what a shop may charge. Plus, you have a complete metric & SAE with the most common sizes if you ever need it. I liked the set that much so I bought another one to have as a spare.

worked like a charm on my 1979 gs850g engine. two out of 8 exhaust bolts broke off ugh. they were seized in so tight. i first welded a bolt to each...my weld was so strong that the seized bolts broke off even further into the head....not even at the point i welded a new bolt to them... thats when i knew i had to drill em out. i was able to repair them using this kit WITHOUT having to remove the engine from the frame. that saved me a ton of trouble and work. the kit has plenty of coils of many sizes for numerous future jobs. great by and super strong. i need get a similar kit in sae sizes soon.

Skeptical at first because of the price but don't let that scare you off, comes with everything you need except the handle for the tap which I never use anyways. I was really suprised with the ammount of heli coils it came with also! Another suprise was it showed up earlier than the shipping date! So far I have ony used 1 size but I did 6 holes in a aluminum head with it and it cut the first one just as good as it did the last. I would recommend and also buy again!

Needed a heli coil to repair my band saw wheel bolt hole that was stripped. Although I only needed one size I know the others will be useful at some point. The tools are a much higher quality than ones I was finding locally. Must have for any tool buff!
