Worked as needed.
This is for chasing/repairing threads. If you have a proper vise for the pipe you're threading and don't try to advance the die any more than a 1/4-1/3 turn with proper back off to break the chip, it will cut new threads.

Worked fine
First I would say if you are new to a die like I was, what a pain in the rear it was. After making some test pieces, and finding a procedure that worked well it was really easy. I made some threaded pvc nipples, and custom threaded pipes. Those custom pieces fit npt perfectly. From what I read schedule 80 is easier to thread but all I had to use was schedule 40. I found that grinding down the first half inch to that of like a thin wall pvc pipe worked well to start the threading, and keep the thread straight. I put the die in a vice and spun the pipe by hand. That way seemed to give more leverage for threading and control over the straightness. I used mineral oil as a cutting oil. Without leverage and oil it is really hard to thread. Then just cut off the ground down part and you have your piece. Haven't used this on steel so I cant help you there.

Good Die for Rethreading...I provde needed wrench size!
Good die for cleaning up and chasing damaged or dirty/rusty/painted pipe threads. Note that this in NOT my preference for threading an unthreaded pipe, but it can do that in a pinch...I have a heavy duty die set with features that help align the die with the pipe to thread unthreaded pipe...but my heavy-duty die set is too big to work in a confined space or on a short pipe nipple. That's where this compact rethreading die is great. For those wanting to know what wrench fits this die (Amazon doesn't say)...this 1/2" pipe die is 1.438" across flats, so one can use a 1 7/16" die stock or 1 7/16" socket wrench, or equiv. open end or box wrench. A socket would be best for tight quarters as one can turn it with a ratchet and various extenders. In a pinch one can just use a pair of channel locks...not pretty, but it works in confined space for light-duty cleaning. A big adjustable wrench will of course work, but it adds a lot of bulk around the die in tight quarters.Highly recommended!

works well for chasing aluminum fittings
I got this to chase and clean up 1/2 NPT aluminum fittings. typical automotive performance anodized aluminum fittings don't fit great and often only thread in 2-2.5 threads into the hole (aluminum, steel, whatever). I use this die to chase the male fitting threads so that i can get sufficient thread engagement. with 90 degree or angled fittings i chase the threads just enough so that i can index the fitting and orientate however I need.I haven't tried it on Iron pipe, hence only 4 stars.

Meh.
I bought this die hoping to avoid buying the "real thing" - as in a full size pipe-threading 4-cutter die. I have only very occasional need to cut 1/2" NPT threads and figured that with a lot of oil and slow work this would be good. The threads I made with this die on a piece of Sch40 galvanized pipe were fine for use on the clothes hanger rod, but no way would they seal if the pipe was to be used for pressure. Very rough, with chunks missing, and very high turning effort. If you will be okay with choppy threads for floor flanges and the like, look no further. If you want just one pipe properly threaded and want to cut costs, go to Homer Despot where they use a slick Ridgid power threader, for free. If you intend to do some serious plumbing, suck it up and go buy the big-boy toys.

This 1/2" die is JUNK!
This 1/2" NPT die looked new but was so dull it could cut into brass. I do not recommend buying this brand die.

Fine quality used correctly
Works fine. This is not a tool for cutting a lot of pipe thread. I was using it to clean of a few threads on a pipe where I had very little clearance and it did the job.

Perfect for threading plastic pipe
We needed something to thread plastic pipe for our irrigation system. This worked great.
