Orange Suet Cake - Pack of 12

Doesn't Melt, It Crumbles.
It doesn't melt, but it crumbles; it crumbles like crazy! My birds give it five stars; they prefer it over all the others I've tried. And a few years ago I would have given it five, when it didn't melt OR crumble. Now it is so crumbly that every time a bird pecks at it, twice as much falls to the ground as what ends up in the bird's beak. (So in this case, the suet disappearing quickly doesn't mean the birds are eating it all.) I was going to quit buying it until I thought about putting it in a platform feeder instead of a suet cage. The photo shows the results; all that loose stuff would have gone on the ground. I'll try this for awhile and see if it all gets eaten before I try something less expensive. I'm sure it was an accident that C&S's latest formula resulted in the crumbliness.

If You Hang It, They WIll Come
Hands-down the most popular suet cake I've purchased and, now, the only one I purchase. The five birds pictured were all feeding yesterday in a span of less than 5 minutes from first to last. Flickers, Woodpeckers and Dark-Eyed Juncos are also frequent visitors. I agree with the comments that the suet chips but those pieces fall to the ground and the same birds plus Spotted Towhees, Song Sparrows, Finches and, it appears, Robins feed on those fragments. On average, I'd say a box of 12 cakes will last about 6 weeks, give or take. The only negative I can think to insert is that European Starlings like them too but they are easily spooked so I try to disturb them when I see them. If you are not aware, Starlings are a serious threat to woodpeckers and should be discouraged if you want to attract woodpeckers to a safe environment.

Birds love this even more than homemade suet
I have also "taste tested" orange delight against other flavors and brands of suet in my yard in the Pacific Northwest, even against my fresh homemade suet with peanut butter, fruit, seeds and nuts! The birds love this suet best and I've been ordering it by the case for over a year. When you buy it by the case, you always have on hand a nice little gift for your friends and family who enjoy birds and haven't yet discovered this particular flavor. Friends always come back a few days later and say, "The birds already devoured it and where can I get more?!" Yes, it is crumbly, you'll go through it quick, but the ground feeding birds come by and clean it up every day once they discover it. Think of it this way --- it's not an easy life being a wild bird, why not be a blessing to them and buy what they obviously want?

Works as Advertised! Birds Love It
Holds up great when taking it out of the package (as long as you do it gently) and the birds seem to go *nuts* for it. 😉 it’s also easy to break apart if you want to put pieces of it in your regular bird feeder tray.I put it out and almost immediately had a family of oak titmice show up. They love it and hang upside down to eat it and have been feeding pieces of it to their young. They’re pretty fun to watch. Took a few weeks for a a few different birds to show up but we now have regular visits by a pair of Scrub Jays who were not in our backyard that we had seen before adding this. We had a pair of mourning doves and one to two towhees hanging around but they seem more frequent now. We have others too that look like chickadees or sparrows but they are more skiddish when I’m outside and I don’t know all the birds where we live. For reference, we’re in South Bay (south of San Francisco) and live very close to a freeway (lots of freeway noise), and don’t have any trees in our backyard for birds to hang out in.Downsides? Squirrels like this too. A lot. So do rats. And no orioles yet.

The Birds Love this Stuff
So, how do you grade suet on "warmth?" If you wamr it it melts. I just went middle of the road on that rating. This stuff is easy to handle, in its sealed plastic packaging. The plastic cover comes off easily and cleanly in one piece, and you can gently push the cake out of the package and into your feeder without even touching it.Once in, the birds come to this immediately. Right now, one of these cakes is lasting about a week before the birds have consumed it entirely. The 12-pack is good in that you have lots of extra and don't have to keep ordering. The price for the 12-pack is also a good one, compared to what you're paying in a grocery or hardware store.

Absolutely the best suet for attracting birds.
I've been exclusively using this brand and type (orange no melt) of suet for more than 10 years. Out of all the suet I've tried this one by far attracts the most variety of birds (blue birds, wood peckers, mocking birds, nuthatches, chickadees, etc) and is simply loved by them all. I've kept trying other varieties and keep coming back to this one over and over again.

Do you like to visit your feeders often?
If you do, then this is the suet to get. My birds simply adore it, and as a result, they devour it like no other I've seen. I have not had crumbling problems yet, but that might simply be due to the fact that a cake is completely eaten in two days. I have three different suet feeders, and use both this (orange) and another type. The "normal" suet is eaten, albeit more slowly; but when I put both orange and regular suet out at the same time, the orange is attacked while the regular type is politely pecked from time to time.I have seen a variety of birds become fans of big orange, including some that did not visit my (black sunflower or mix) other feeders before: wrens, cardinals, grackles, mockingbirds, downy and red-bellied woodpeckers, nuthatches, house finches, et al. Overall, the suet is great because the birds clearly adore it, and that then leads to more birds visiting your little feeding sanctuary. If you have a willingness to order more suet than you're used to and also visit your feeders more often, then this is your suet!

The birds at my house loves these
These suet cakes didn't last long at my house. When I put these out a had 2 new birds that came to my feeder. I got to see a Baltimore Oriole and a couple golden finches. They are less mess when when handling them. They don't leave my hands feeling dirty. I would recommend this to any bird lover. If you purchase these suet cakes you just might see a new bird at your feeder
