A must read for all music students, and academics
This book is by far the most comprehensive one that I have come across on Indian Classical music. As a music major, I have attended multiple universities taking courses ranging from Music Theory to Applied Music, Music History, World Music etc. While there are numerous books that give you an overview of the styles of Indian classical music, and some of the popular instruments, this one stands out as one of the few that goes deep into the building blocks of Indian Classical Music, then goes on to focus deeper on the rhythmic part of it, and culminates in providing an unparalleled insight into one of the leading percussion instruments. I have also come across many instructors/students/musicians who thrive in their cocoons, but lack the exposure to other schools/styles of music. This book will definitely open new perspectives for all of them.Having said that about the content, I hope the publishers make it available in Hard-Cover, and color print to serve better as an academic source.

Helpful and informative
An interesting and informative book about the history of this instrument. Everything about this instrument is explained in detail, and a very informative chapter about the tala system (Indian rhythmic system) is included too.I had the privilege to talk to Sunil personally a few times, he is a true expert on the subject, and he is an amazing mridangam player as well.

This is a fantastic book, I would highly recommend it!
RESOUNDING MRIDANGAM: The Majestic South-Indian Drum' offers exactly what it promises - it helps those who pursue their journey in learning Mridangam, Indian classical music, and musical instruments. It’s a great contribution in the field of percussion art in Carnatic music. This is a fantastic book for many reasons; this book elaborates about the evolution of Mridangam you might not have read anywhere else! The usage of western music terminology against the Indian one, would help any western music lover that is looking for a more precise, elaborate way of rhythmical expression. The author has done an amazing amount of research, delivering a lovingly written treasure trove of well-rounded details that will interest music enthusiasts from many different schools and tastes. The concepts of ‘thalam’ and ‘layam’ detailed in this book, provide the reader even minute details about the art of mridnagam and can be used as reference books for curious students. An added bonus to the readers - The book detailed the pivotal history of around 200 great percussion artists in a dedicated chapter. Fascinating connections are drawn from the histories and influences of Indian music from these great maestros. This is a book which I can spend hours of reading. I've learned enormous amounts about a wide variety of music forms within each chapter. Readers with any level of music interest will find something of value here. Highly recommended!
