Roots: The Complete Original Series (Blu-ray)

Not seen this since I was much younger and a trip to South Carolina made me want to watch again.

I bought this for my collection well done good story, based on a true story worth watching and adding to anyone's collection. I recommend it

I liked being able to back up if I missed something, and being able to binge watch when I had time.When it was on TV I missed a lot when I was interrupted and could not pause or watch again. Now I can enjoy it completely.

So here goes:I won't really delve into the content as this has been covered elsewhere on this forum and on the reviews of the previous releases. Only thing I can say about ROOTS is that even 40 years after it first aired, it is still very powerful; even more so when compared to the recently released and inferior History channel remake.The picture quality is fantastic; color accuracy is spot-on; image is super sharp; the aspect ratio is correct at 4:3 and the source material is clean (don't know if it was restored). Another thing people have not so far mentioned is that the episodes are presented as they originally aired. The version that has been available on home video ever since ABC reran the show in the fall of 1978 has been the 6 episode "syndicated version". Those six episodes were each two hours long.This BD release includes all 8 episodes as originally broadcast: Eps 1and 2 are each 2hrs long; eps 3,4,5 are each 1hr; ep 6 is 2 hrs; ep7 is 1hr and the finale ep 8 is two hrs. It's nice to have all the original intros and end credit sequences as they were seen 40 years ago.Most of the extra material has been ported from previous DVD releases. Among the new ones is "The Cast Looks Back" which is very short and pretty thin, but good to have, nonetheless. Roots: The American Story Continues" is again thin and includes testimony of some notables (Sharpton, Whoopi Goldberg, Debbie Allen te al.) on how it affected them when the program first aired and on why the show is still important today especially in regards to recent events.Unfortunately, the audio commentary by the cast and crew that was available in the previous DVD release is missing here. I am puzzled as to why it was not included as I found it to be one of the most fascinating and informative part of the extra features. For that reason alone I will be keeping my DVD version.

I was just a teenager when Roots first aired on TV as a mini-series. I remember having to look away, sometimes in tears, during some of the more graphic scenes of the movie. Its an extremely riveting, often painful, story that gives us an In-Your-Face look at how this nation was built; on the blood, sweat,and tears, of a people who were stolen from their homes, and forced into a life where they were treated worse than animals! Their families were ripped apart; fathers and sons, especially the stronger, more masculine ones, were literally dragged out of the arms of their loved ones, quite often never to see each other again! Roots, and Roots, the next generation, is a true, painful story that ALL Americans should see! Growing up, I encouuntered only a minute fraction of the prejudice, and humiliation these people suffered throughout their entire lives It was painful. but pales in comparison what these people endured in their lives. Alex Haley, the author of the Roots saga was a genius with words. This is his family's heritage, and he chose to share it through his books. I've read the books, and these movies stay true to the stories! They draw you so deep into the story, that it makes you want to reseach your own ancestry, and makes you want to right all the wrongs that this family endured! There are many hours of story, and its best to watch the way it aired on TV, like a mini series; that is, if you can bring yourself to turn it off! These movies should be watched together with your family, so that, maybe, our children will get a good look at the sacrifices made for the freedom we all take for granted! This is not just a series of true events from our past. Its also an investment; as long as we have a record of the truth, it will ensure that we never forget!Roots - The Complete Collection (Roots / Roots - The Next Generations)

I watched roots more than 5 times. All should watch. Wow I never known the struggles until I watched.

Maybe my mistake was reading the book just prior to watching the 3 Blue ray discs. After disc 1 the start of disc 2 said "previously" and showed scenes I hadn't seen that did somewhat explain the jump in time. I rechecked disc 1 to see if there was more on the disc or even on the back- no, what I saw was what there was. This was a very good mini-series with great actors but watch the DVD first before reading the book and your experience will probably be fine.

I received 13 DVD’s , of Roots series, I am still watching them. They are Fantastic. History of when the African villages were kidnapped and Slaved the poor people and brought them by ships to USA ,The Worst Thing happened to them, very sad to watch. I Love History, and recommend that everyone should watch and learn from this history, and that this should Never happen again.

Durante mucho tiempo desee verla nuevamente, y ahora la tengo. Es un hermoso documento.

Great boxset as it comes with a booklet with photos

Ich bekam diese Box als Weihnachtsgeschenk. Mir hat schon die Serie im Fernsehen gut gefallen.Es geht um die Geschichte der Nachfahren des in Gambia /Afrika geborenen Kunta Kinte, der als Sklave in die Staaten verkauft wird. Die Serie beschönigt nichts, was diese Menschen erdulden mussten. Viele bekannte Schauspieler trifft man dort wieder.Da einige Szenen doch recht eindringlich sind, sollten kleinere Kinder nicht unbedingt mitgucken, oder nur mit begleitenden Erwachsenen, die den Hintergrund aufarbeiten können.Einziger Wermutstropfen: die Gestaltung der Box und der DVD ist ein bisschen billig gehalten.
