This item can be a great addition to your game collection both to play and display! Review There are rally games and there are rally games. And then there's Colin McRae Rally 3. It's difficult to know where to start the review on the third instalment of this hugely successful franchise: the eye-wateringly sharp graphics; the intuitive gameplay; or the understated, superb commentary and sound. In the end, it's probably easier to start with "just buy it." As you'd expect from a top rally sim, everything about the vehicles can be customised, and tinkering under the hood between stages really produces a difference. If you're a bad driver you can also see the difference, as tearing the hood, side panels, or windows out midstage reveals an astonishing level of detail within the car. Engine parts move, suspension arms judder, and Mr. McRae himself bounces around the car's cockpit in full 3-D. With a variety of gameplay modes ranging from single races to three-season tours of duty as McRae himself, there's plenty of bang for your buck here--and believe us, by the time you've cannoned off the scenery for the umpteenth time you'll know what bangs are all about. Thankfully, code masters have resisted the temptation to fill Colin McRae Rally 3 with discordant music tracks, relegating the score to intro and menu screens and leaving the in-game sound to codriver commentary and a multitude of engine sounds--a pleasant change in an age where licensed soundtracks are king. Perhaps the strongest element of this game, though, is the gameplay. The car handling is dead on, and in wild weather (snow, rain, and fog) guiding a speeding Ford Focus around sharp bends is a real art form. --Chris Russell -- .co.uk

I was a better gamer when I was younger lmao
I dont remember it being this hard to play when I played it for ps2 a long time ago when I was a wee little lad lol but it brings back much nostalgia when my grandma bought it for me when they had it in the scholastics book fair when I was in middle school

Challenging Ride
The only other game you could compare this with is Microsoft's RalliSport Challenge. RalliSport Challenge graphics are brighter and the feel of the joystick is better, but you do not get penalized for flooring it throughtout the race. Finesse is rewarded in Infogrames Colin McRae Rally 3 after playing both, Colin McRae Rally 3 is more realistic. The damage on the car does affect your performance, the dust and the rain does affect your vision, and the tracks are more competitive. If your lookng for realism choose Colin McRae Rally 3, if you just want fun with your young ones, choose Microsoft RalliSport Challenge.

Missing a lot of features
Don't get me wrong--the game play is fine, the navigator's pace notes are fine, but the menus and the setup are missing several features that were included in the PS1 version of Colin McRae Rally, chief among them, the ability to pick and choose exactly which stages on any given course you want to race in time trial mode. Second, gone is the ability to tune your car between stages--you can't tweak the suspension or change to a different tire type between stages like you could in CMcR1, not to mention changing the gear ratios and the brake balance to favor front or rear bias. CMcR3 menu navigation is weird, as it wraps around to the same choices left to right and doesn't give you a list that flows logically. The game is fun to play, however, if you like to just take the car how the program sets it up and the environmental effects are awesome, but I've found V-Rally 3 to be much better for the PS-2, and CMcR1 to be better on the PS-1. Also missing from this version is the Rally School qualification as in the PS-1 version, where once you got your expert license you could race any car on any stage and try to beat your best time, and in that version, you couldn't earn any new cars that you didn't have already--I unless I missed a cheat somewhere along the way. Like I said, this version is fun, but I do miss the car customizing features of the older version, but this version does have the older version beat as far as environmental effects and pace notes, so I guess it's a wash. There is no Colin McRae Rally 2 or CMcR4 for the PS-2 in NTSC, those awesome versions are only available on PAL Playstations, and I'm disappointed for that, because I think all of them are the best rally games ever made, V-Rally 3 for the PS-2 notwithstanding. (V-Rally and V-Rally 2, which are only available on the PS-1 are okay, but they don't really compare to V-Rally 3 or the PS-2 versions).

I have only one complaint
This game is a great game but I have one complaint. The graphics on this game aren't very good at all. If you've played Rallisport Challenge then played this then you'll know what I'm talking about. The graphics on Rallisport are far superior to the graphics on this game. This game does not utilize the graphical capability of the X-Box like Rallisport. Sometimes I forget I'm playing this on the X-Box and think I'm playing it on a PS-1.The trees in this game look really crummy. If you've played Tiger Woods 2003 on The X-Box then you know what I mean. They just don't look like trees but look like some one dimensional green flaps with holes in them. Also, when you're driving, instead of having a fixed view of the scenery ahead of you it is constantly appearing out of nowhere which is something that is typical of early games. Sometimes it's hard to enjoy this game when you know the graphics could have been better. Before I get to the game itself let me first say that I am a die-hard racing fan through and through. I watch CART, F1, NASCAR and of course WRC. If you are like me then you need your occasional racing fix during the offseason to curb those racing withdrawls. This has got to be one of the best racing games I have ever played. The circuits are very very challenging and require precise car setup. That is what sets this game apart from Rallisport. Rallisport was pretty much an arcade type game but this one definately is a racing sim. You get to do so much like setting up your car, do a shakedown AND you get to chose from a cockpit view which really makes it more realistic. I have a newfound respect for these drivers.Another part of the game that is worth mentioning is the replay. You get to watch a replay of your run after every heat and I have to tell you that it is a blast and sometimes very amusing to watch. Seeing the back end of your car come out with dust flying in the air as you take a corner is very thrilling. If you are a fan of WRC and are looking for a realistic, fun and challenging racing sim then look no further. Sure the graphics could be better but the game more than makes up for it in it's gameplay.

Fun, realistic, close to great
Realistic handling and car performance, good tracks, nice graphics, great interfaces and fast loading. Downside is you always race alone - which is realistic - but not as exciting as group races. If a good rally race game is what you are after, this won't disappoint.
