The Road to Wigan Pier

Orwell at His Best
I read this book along with a couple of others by George Orwell as a teenager. I have decided to reread them in my 60's and The Road to Wigan Pier was third on my list. Being from WIgan myself it was of great interest to me. Orwell's look at class distinction and his view of the beginnings of the Socialist movement of the time is a real eye-opener. He is one of a few authors who have openly described the differences in the characteristics, attributes, and attitudes of the classes of his time and captured a glimpse of the future of the political landscape could turn out. It has much more interest, including what it was like in and around the coal mines of the North and the coal miner's life.It is a brilliant book by a prolific writer and intelligent author.I thoroughly recommend reading it.
