Description Houseflies can be versatile and nutritious feeders for a wide range of animals. They readily adapt to different diets and may be used as maggots, pupae and/or flies and tend to have very high acceptance rates. For instance, some web weaving spiders are better at catching adult flyers and flyers may be attractive to visual predators like mantids and frogs. Other kinds of web weavers and ground dwelling foragers, like wolf spiders or chickens, might prefer maggots and pupae. Nutrition The nutritional value of the flies depends on their care and what they are fed. Poorly fed or malnourished flies and other insects fed on minimal diets may be of little value or even starve your animals. Well-fed flies, fed on a high quality diet from diverse sources, may give your animals better growth rates, better egg production, better survival and less cannibalism. Spider Pharm feeds maggots and flies with enhanced diets but a large proportion of their reserves are burned up during metamorphosis in the pupae. They are still nutritious but can be better if allowed feed and bulk up before use. What You Get Housefly pupae are shipped in fabric bags wrapped in paper toweling. These provide some protection and insulation and allow the pupae to breathe. A mixture of corn meal and baking soda as added to larger numbers of pupae to absorb moisture and odors. Room temperature freezer gel bags (NOT frozen) are included to slow heating and cooling in extreme weather. Eclosion (hatching) time depends on temperature. Adult flies will emerge about 4-5 days after pupation if the pupae are kept warm, but may take much longer at or below room temperature.
