Rare indeed! One of, if not the best tasting gins I’ve ever tried
While I’m not completed aghast to the drink known as gin, it would never be my first or second choice, perhaps making position four on the list if mixed as part of a martini or the like. The Black Robin though is indeed a rare gin from my point of view, as it is quite tasty outside of use with a mixer, having a much milder taste compared to say Gordon’s gin when drank neat. The gin is handcrafted in New Zealand using filtered water from the companies own spring running underneath the distillery. Small batch distilled in hybrid copper pots, it is blended with 11 ‘exotic’ organic botanicals which no doubt provide its unique flavour signature. Going further, each bottle raises funds for Forest & Bird, a New Zealand based charity that works to help protect native bird species of New Zealand.Taste-wise as mentioned it is much milder on the palate than prior gin’s I have tried, mellow and clean tasting with noticeable but not overpowering citrus notes. I sampled using the tasting methods recommended in the listing and would rate each as follows.Neat at room temperature - clean and mild with noticeable citrus notes, aftertaste of lemon and not overpowering in alcohol volume or bite like past gins triedWith a splash of water - milder taste, which would be certainly more tolerable to those who have an aversion to ginWith tonic water & ice - a winner! Clean and fresh with more rounded flavours, complemented by the tonic water. Very drinkable even for a few friends who have tried (and failed to even swallow a sip of gin).At its price point, £39.95 at time of review), it is aimed more at the premium drinker market so won’t be an obvious one to try for most. Should you wish to treat yourself or find it within the £28-34 price bracket it is well worth giving it a go.
