Good value
Used to replace existing sand filter. Works great. Price was less than one at pool store. It took us about 3 hours to remove old filter and install this one. It was pretty quick considering we were first time DIYs

Great filter, but bad pressure gauge and bad shipping container
This unit works well with a 75 gpm pump and salt weather system. The combination provides crisp clear water to an 8000 gal pool.Negatives are that the manufacturer ships it with a cheap plastic pressure gauge that's DOA and the entire filter unit is not carton properly for its weight. The entire shipping container should be changed and replaced with one designed to carry this huge filter.

Filter problem
If you are interested in stories with happy endings you would be better off reading some other review. In this review their is no happy ending, no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle.("The Bad Beginning, By Lemmony Snicket). I purchased the filter to replace the same make and model. After about three years the one I replaced sprang a small leak in the seam and could not be fixed. The new one lasted for slightly less then 3 weeks until it sprang a leak in the seem. I called the manufacture about the problem. The first question the rep asked is how I knew that it was leaking, which I thought was some what of a silly question. After explaining how I detected the leak I was told that I was best contacting the installer about the problem, when I explained that I installed the filter the I was told that I could return it to them and pay shipping both ways. After a little research I found that it was still in the return window for Amazon and could return it for free, which I did.I would not recommend this product.

Great Filter
Very nice filter. Be careful to not over tighten the couplers to the valve but no leaks on first start up and easy to service.

Pentair SD80 Pool Filter - Good value for the money
I read all of the negative reviews and despite this, I ordered the filter.I replaced a Millennium sand filter that lasted for 16 years and the only reason it failed is the threads on the drain port over time had become stripped due to the cap being threaded with sand which flattened the plastic threads and removed chunks from the plastic threads (like sand paper).Pentair SD80 received 06/11/2020. This filter was installed on a 15x30 above ground pool with a 2.0hp pump.1.) Yes, the packaging leaves a lot to be desired. It arrived in a flimsy cardboard box. The top and bottom of the box had popped open (luckily all of the parts remained inside). To be honest, I am surprised all of the pieces made it here in the same "box".**To the manufacturer, maybe put it on a small pallet, use a heavier duty cardboard box, strap it to the pallet, use more than one strip of tape on the top/bottom of the box.**2.) The multi-port valve was just floating around in the box as were the parts required for installation.3.) The filter pressure gauge - the housing itself is metal, but there is a plastic ring which shows starting pressure and then roughly up 10 psi is the time in which you should "clean the filter". I see no real issues with the pressure gauge. It is made about the same as all the rest of them out there.4.) The filter itself is tan colored, which helps in keeping the water returned to the pool cooler versus the all black filter I had installed previously. If you live in Texas, the smallest details during our very hot summers are noticed.5.) The multi-port valve openings for waste/return/pump are all 1.5" (fittings, hoses, etc are not included).Others have commented that after a period of time the filter split at the seams. I purchased the 3 year extended warranty to help remedy this issue. I would recommend the same.Overall - It has only been one day since it has been installed. I run my pump/filter a minimum of 8 hours per day. I will report back in 3 months time to provide an update.Additional recommendations:Build some sort of cover over your pool equipment to protect it from the sun. I built a simple four post with an r-panel roof. Keeps it shaded most of the day.Use teflon tape on the fittings. Don't use the cheap white garbage. They have a thicker gray tape, yes it costs about $5.00 USD per roll, but it's worth it.

This was a replacement due to the original identical item ...
This was a replacement due to the original identical item suffering a small seam split. The major issue with this design is that there's no way to remove the sand once its in there. There is a water drain for winterizing. When this filter arrived, the box was literally falling apart but everything was there except for the installation/use manual which had vanished during shipment. FYI, this filter requires 350 pounds of filter sand or (7) 50lb bags.

Perfect Replacement
This was a direct replacement for my old Pentair tank that sprung a leak after ten years. Since it was the exact same tank it was easy to replace. Local company wanted three times the cost to replace it. It was great buy.

Costumer support is a nightmare!!
I recommend Pentair as it seems to be the best, I’m only giving 2 stars due to HORRABLE costumer service , my filter is still under warranty and I only needed the filter head, for days they gave me a run around, didn’t understand English, finally they sent the filter that I didn’t request and no filter head, now they aren’t answering the phone. If you plan on buying a pentair product order from a pool store so they can stand by the warranty, the care support from the filter I ordered is horrable and I still don’t have the filter head that’s under warranty
