This is the worst book on the Turkmen I have ever found. The author, while an expert on Islamic art, knows nothing of Turkmen art, much of which predates Islamic influence on the Turkmen. The author denigrates the primary research of the Schletzer brothers, preferring to interject her own interpretations of the meaning of the Turkmen items. After all, why believe what the Turkrmen told the Schletzers. I own seven books on Turkmen artifacts, as well as 16 other books which contain sections on the Turkmen. A number of the item shown in this latest book are styles which never appear in any of the other books, leading one to conclude that they are modern, not ancient as stated in the book. The Wolfs have been conned concerning their purchases, and the Metropolitan Museum has been snockered..Don't buy this book unless you want to get hopping mad, or have a good laugh.

Having no expert knowledge in the area of Turkmen jewelry I appreciated this book primarily for its general introduction to the subject as well as the excellent color reproductions of the items in the Wolf collection. The objects displayed in the Metropolitan exhibition appear to be of great beauty and elegance; in their time these often bulky and ornate jewels must have cost the average Turkmen dearly. While noting concerns re authenticity by other reviewers, those interested in this fascinating area of decorative art should find much to enjoy in this reasonably priced and excellently printed overview of Turkmen Jewelry.

I bought this book to use a reference and inspiration for my own jewelry. It exceeds my expectations in every way with magnificent pictures and great descriptions of the pieces and in many cases the construction of the piece as well.
