Encyclopedia of Knots and Fancy Rope Work

Fascinating, and very informative!
I came across this book some 30 years ago while I was in the Navy in Mayport, Florida. I found the book to be very informative and probably the best book all around for instructions on how to make certain knots and braids. I made a copy of the giant Anchor braid knot featured in the book, and surrounded it with all the other knots we used in the Navy. Then, put a nice braid around the edge and put it all on a piece of Polyurethane covered Curly Maple stock. It was beautiful! To make a long story short, it ended up being stolen. I was nearly heartbroken after spending so much time on it. But, some 30 years later, I found the book online, and am attempting to remake the board again. Although the Anchor braid knot will take some time doing, it will be well worth it in the longrun. This book gets all stars from me. It is the most informative book I've been able to find. I did just about all the rope splicing and braiding onboard ship, and this book helped me to learn everything I know. I couldn't find a more informative book anywhere. I've always been highly impressed with all the knots and instructions on making them. It is well worth the money for anyone that wants to learn about rope splicing, making different knots and their uses, and braids. It's not just for the more advanced, it is also geared towards the average joe that just wants to learn how to do something. That is what is most impressive that I've found about the book. It's 30 years later, and I am still enthralled with the book and learning new things everyday. Sincerely, BM 3 Steven Lilienthal of the USS Yosemite AD-19 from Mayport, Florida

Along with ABoK, this is a must have.
I have only started to read this massive tome, but I have found it very interesting and well worth the price.

Replacement Copy
This is a replacement copy for a 40 year old edition that was lost in a fire. I learned marlinspike seamanship nearly 60 years ago and find this book indispensable. Yes, it can be challenging to apply some of the instructions but with a little knowledge and practice, this book will guide you. Highly recommended.

Not!
Description and book jacket says "This is unquestionably the greatest book on knots and rope work ever published.."Unfortunately it is not what it proclaims; however it does have fair pictures of completed knots and would work well with The Asley Book of Knots which is considerably clearer in the tying but the pictures in the "Encyclopedia" would help to understand the finished look. Additionally the descriptions are greatly lacking in specificity.

Not for sissies and never loan it out,
Great old book. I applied buch of what I learned in this excellent book aboard an 82 foot U.S. Coast Guard Cutter in the early 70's. Not a color picture book, a book only an old boatswain mate interested in all activities relating to marlinspike seamanship. I really endeared myself to my first class officer in charge then the Chief of the boat when he found I really loved dressing up the place.

Ein "must have" für Knoter !

The must have for all merchant mariners
This is my second encyclopedia, the first was eaten by a dog. I’m a retired merchant mariner and have used this book in my work aboard ships for many years as a bosun. The chapter on wire splicing isn’t thorough enough, more techniques exist. This is not a book for a beginner and I recommend it for professional use or for seasoned rope workers. This is, by far, the ultimate encyclopaedia of knots.

Advanced knotting in style
An amazing volume full of some of the most advanced knots, bends, hitches etc there have ever been this is truly the bible of knotting and a must for any one into this subject, there are so many in there you will be surprised. I thought I knew a lot of knots but this has opened my eyes to the fact I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to the art of knotting, so much food for thought with so many variations, great descriptions and history contained in this volume really lays it all out for you to explore and digest also to revist time and time again to learn more as there is so much to learn and take in on the subject which has been around for thousands of years.Highly recommended reading.
