Worth a read.
This is the second book by Mr Davison and along with his first I have the same gripe. Along with another reviewer I found it a good investigation/read spoilt by being interspersed with his constant whingeing about the state of the Police/his mental health/worry over speaking to his team/giving himself a talking to/relationship with his father/standing at Humber Bridge etc etc. I have to skim over all those negative thoughts as it's nothing to do with the murder of a young girl.In fact I think it's worse than his first book Natalie! If you ever write a third book Mr Davison, please leave "yourself" out of it!

One of Humberside's forgotten hero's tells his story of seeking justice
'Rachel' is the second of two books by retired Humberside Detective Paul Davison. The first book was 'Natalie' in which he investigates the brutal murder of a young woman who's life had spiralled into a tragedy of drug abuse and prostitution.'Rachel' follows the large scale investigation into the disappearance of Rachel Moran who vanished on a short walk home during the early hours of New Year's Day 2003.Like the previous story - Paul Davison tells this story in a humble and meticulous way. It is very much told by a man who admits his own personal weaknesses but ultimately he became a strong leader who eventually brought justice for Rachel's family.Paul's careful story telling make these two books very special - he is able to take the reader on a journey through the eyes of a senior detective and gets us to relive the first few hours & days of a major police investigation which begins to slowly come together like pieces of a jigsaw.A thoroughly enjoyable read with lots of emphasis on the various police officers and their characters who hunt for answers and help to convict the guilty.

A must read account of a terrible event.
This is indeed a 'must read' for all police Senior Investigating Officers. The meticulously detailed account of the investigation into the gruesome and senseless murder of Rachel Moran coexists with the personal pressures on the author as the result of a flawed grievance against him. Notwithstanding his complete exoneration from any actions to substantiate the grievance the scars run deep and emerge throughout this book. Not only did Paul Davison provide outstanding leadership to his team in the initial search for Rachel he followed this through to its conclusion with the conviction of the perpetrator all while still dealing with his own demons. An outstanding account written by an inspirational police officer who shows immense compassion for the victim and her family and quite clearly shows concern for the excellent team of officers working under his command.

Must read
This book is well written, it takes you on the journey through Rachel’s tragic murder, all through the investigation and the court case, it makes you feel raw emotions, the SIO did an amazing job of finding her body and securing a conviction, well done, hard to put down this book

Very good read from the SIO of a brutal murder investigation
I have just completed reading Paul Davison’s book ‘Rachel’ and thoroughly enjoyed the read, especially given the fact he is not an author historically. The details of his investigation gave the right balance I thought and the personal aspects of his working life were very informative of the Police culture of the time and his own challenges. It was good to hear his account of events at the time which fed my own recollection of the case. A good read and sensitively done with regards to Rachel and her family I thought.

Brilliant book.
This book was so well written. I didn't want to put it down and I was sad when I got to the end.The respect and humility shone through every chapter. It put faith back into the police force , and it made me want to cry in places. My heart goes out to Rachel's family, who carried themselves with such resolve. I'm so glad they managed to show Rachel's true personality, it seems the world will be a darker place without her.

Absorbing read
Thoroughly engrossing read which I couldn't put down. Amazing insight, worts and all into the thought processes and pressures on a police senior detective at the top of his game. One time exposing his own frailties and the next portraying the grief of the family of Rachel, Paul Davison takes us through his investigation and the excellent support from his dedicated team of detectives and support staff. The ensueing Court case is equally tense and illustrates the hurdles the police and witnesses must overcome to secure a verdict.
