The latest installment of this series did not disappoint
I had pre-ordered this book ages ago and completely forgotten about it, so it was a pleasant surprise when it popped up in my receipts and on my Kindle. I'm not sure that this one would stand alone, so if you are new to the series, you might want to catch up before you dive in to this one, though crucial elements of past books are recapped where necessary. (I almost felt like it would be worthwhile having a binge read of the entire series. I suspect there are longer arcs that would be satisfying.)The ethical dilemmas of working for a client you know has malevolent intentions are addressed well in this book. We also get more development of some of the key relationships, between Charlotte and her sister, and between Charlotte and Lord Ingram. This series is more than just a mystery novel or retelling of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It is also a romance that runs over several books, and centres a woman who is not at all interested in conforming to social expectations (re body image, fashion, or sexual mores) but needs to carefully negotiate her transgressions to maintain her freedom and ability to earn a living.
