rather abstruse plot
I am enjoying reading the whole series about the Winterton sisters. However, this particular book, while pleasant enough did not ring true. 3 1/2 star5s might be more accurate. Margaret's selective mutism is not really convincing, nor is the way she writes lengthy elaborate speeches in chalk on a slate!. There is a hint that it might have been be due to some trauma in her childhood, but nothing is made of that. As the book unfolds the plot becomes more and more complex so that it is difficult to keep track of whose child belonged to whom. The last minute change of heart of Mel's father is rather too sudden. It was pleasant to see Leo Audley again, indeed I was wondering when he would appear in the story as the previous book , the Chaperon, mentioned his visit to Margaret. review id The Companion
I am still in the middle of this book. Beautifully writen and charming. Shows the difference in attitude and politeness from that era and this. also the expectations of the different members of the society. Love reading it. I am trying to eke it out as the next one is not ready to read yet.

Brilliant.
Kingswood never fails, characterisation, period details, descriptions of place, accuracy of the slower pace of life at that time. The book is sheer enjoyment, a holiday for the mind.

Wonderful.
Fantastic as always from this author, I devoured it in one sitting, sympathising so thoroughly with Margaret that I found it difficult to talk to my husband. The combination of gentle romance combined with mystery all perfectly set within the regency period was just perfect. I'm just impatient for the next one now!

Unnecessarily long
I struggled a bit with this as it seemed unnecessarily long with too many characters. It was pretty clear early on what happened and the clever police investigator wasn't needed.

Long may Ms. Kingswood's imagination contnue!
This series continues to be a pleasure to read and I anticipate reading the next. Very few novels have so many plot layers. I was particularly attracted to the unusual heroine.

Another great and intriguing story, full of entertaining characters, twists and turns. Brilliant story telling and a different kind of leading lady.
