ROCKY BALBOA - VARIOUS [DVD] [2006]

All that is left in the basement
This is quite a nice Rocky movie again, close to the original Oscar-winning debut of the series. And in that sense it is probably better than the other sequels. Although you will have to be able to digest the notion that the dated and implausible computer simulation convinces Rocky to get back in to the ring. But hey, this is Rocky!, as amicable he is as a person, he is not known for his intelligence. The movie other than the relationship with his son and the loss of Adrian is more of a standalone storyline. In the end it is mostly about the character of the underdog rather than emphasising the eventual and obligatory boxing match. The movie explores what an aged Rocky has left in him. The other sequels are about Rocky eventually winning, this is more about his character and choices, which makes it quite an attractive background. At the same time it leans toward science fiction to see a somewhat geriatric Rocky get back in the ring to accept a demo-fight against the super-fit current world champion, Mason ‘The Line’ Dixon”. At least the outcome of the fight is not what you would have guessed based on the preceding material. We started to watch the Rocky movies series with the children on our weekly family movie evening. All the movies, including the more recent Creed movies were available to watch for a while under Amazon Prime. That is unitl Amazon took some of them off again while we were only halfway through the series that the children started to appreciate very much. As such I was forced to buy a few of them to continue to watch them in chronological order. I never rent movies /series as it is helpful to have a digital movie collection at hand in a family, given that the children like to watch some movies repeatedly. So I bought this digital version, that looked quite crisp and sharp. And I am glad I did.

Rocky's still got it
Long time since I've seen the original Rocky but this seemed quite similar in style. Stallone might not be the greatest actor in the world but does a good job in this. Most of the supporting cast is OK, and even Paulie wasn't as annoying as in some of the previous films. Don't know if you'll enjoy it if you're not familiar with the original films but for someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s like me it was a great trip down memory lane.

Epic
As with all the Rocky movies reality is stretched but well up there for entertainment. It’s got a bit of everything.

He’s old but still Gold!
Great addition to the Rocky films... The “it ain’t about how hard you hit” quote from Rocky to his son is just brilliant, sylvester stallone is obviously a very intelligent and hard working man and this is a great bit of advice to listen to when you’re feeling sorry for yourself!
