Exploring Stream of Consciousness
The storyline of this book has already been outlined in other reviews so I won't repeat it.I have read Pointed Roofs so far, there are another two 'chapters' in this paperback.Pointed Roofs is only 185 pages long so I thought that it would not take me long to read it, I was wrong. It is very, very detailed indeed. Richardson chose to describe every eye-brow raise and every in-take of breath of her main character, Miriam. For all that, it is fascinating. None of the other characters are described until Miriam chooses to describe them and for all the minute detail in her own musings she gives nothing much away about the other characters. This is the difference between Richardson, Woolf and Faulkner, only Richardson's main character is described in great detail and from that character's point of view. Woolf and Faulkner don't do that. As mentioned in another review this gives Richardson's prose a different 'feel' to it. It is, however, not at all difficult to follow and makes perfect sense.I read both Woolf and Faulkner before I read Richardson but I have no idea if that made a difference since Richardson's prose is so very different. Not a relax-by-the-beach/holiday read but one that rewards (very much) the persistence of sticking with it.Highly recommended, especially if you want to explore Stream of Consciousness. Read it from the woman who gave it to the world first (and be grateful that there are thirteen parts to Pilgrimage of varying lengths to be enjoyed).

More challenging of the establishment than Woolf or Proust
In great new condition. Richardson should be more widely read.

Four Stars
Needs to be better known.......D.R. is an important modernist.

Early C20 book
I am still reading this. Not a quick read but gives a view of a governess in Germany in early C20. May develop.
