Ican FL40 with Sapim flat spokes and Novatec Hubs
Ican FL40 with Sapim flat spokes and Novatec HubsSeller's been very helpful answering questions about the wheels. So, thanks guys for keeping it real. Because it was in stock, delivery was quick. Box protected the wheels very well. Each wheel came in a protective sleeve. The wheels came with tape, brake pads and skewers. The supplied tape is too narrow to use for tubeless, so it's really just to cover the spoke holes. Get some Stan's or something if tubeless is your goal. Skewers are very light. They look like KCNC, Lixada or Cratic. Is it Ti? Maybe. It'll hold quite well for casual riding. Won't recommend using it for heavier use. The lever can be a bit awkward - and painful - to your fingers.1420 grams right out of the box sans tape, valves and skewers. That's the top end of the range quoted in the description. Wheels are true but the spokes sound like they have varying tensions. So get your set checked out by your LBS. The join between the two halves of the rim is visible in some areas around the rim. It's cosmetic but might be a concern for some. Doubtful that this wheel will split in two halves if it hits a big bump the wrong way. As with most carbon rim brake setups, the failure will more likely be due to heat buildup while braking on long downhill runs. Especially when the wheel does hit a harsh bump or loose rock along the way. These wheels are said to meet and pass the standards protecting against such a problem. If I do find myself needing to go down a hill though, I'd slow down and manage my speed by alternating the brakes between the front and rear wheels, if only to manage heat build-up. And I'd make sure I have sufficient tire pressure for my weight. It seems that the trend towards running very low pressure tires on wider rims is an invitation to ground the carbon rim walls - the part supporting the tire bead - onto the pavement. I've seen pictures of compromised carbon rims where the damage looked like the rim scraped the tarmac, or encountered a small rock on the road. At any rate, it only makes sense to inspect your wheels before and after every ride, as warranted. The wheel graphics are quite subtle. Etched outline of the brand name and the FL40 model name. The only wheel graphics I like better is the waterfall design on the new Assault.Continental GP4KS 23mm in front balloons to 25mm. Smooth shape transition from tire to rim. Very nice!Continental GP4KS 25mm in back balloons to 28mm. Pumped to 90 PSI provides more comfort on longer rides. 90 is plenty for most of us.IRC RBCC 25mm will balloon similarly. IRC X-Guard 25mm will not. I was actually not able to mount the IRCs on these hoops. Even with soapy water.100 miles into the FL40 experience, no issues. Looks really nice on my 2015 black and white Orbea Orca. Wheels spin very quickly and smoothly - no break-in needed. These Novatec hubs are impressive. It seems like I gained some speed after switching from my set of Dura-Ace C24s. The C24s are lighter but not as aero. Braking is good. It makes a very cool whizzing sound. This wheelset is not harsh compared to my other carbon wheelset - a 30mm semi-deep carbon wide disc brake model. I don't see a need to go tubeless at this time. Not for this size tires. And punctures are not really an issue with these Conti's.Will I buy it again? I'm already looking at picking up the FL50 for my endurance bike.

Great Wheelset
These are very nice wheels. The purchase was 90% motivated for improved looks, and they don't disappoint. The 40mm deep by 25mm wide rims give my bike a lean muscular look with out being bulky. Good, solid build. Wheelset was straight and true right out of the box. Carbon rims are solid with no voids. Stock brake pads work well in dry conditions. They are quiet with a slight hum when braking, no squealing. Great spokes and decent hubs round out the package. Honestly, I don't feel any reduction of effort at speeds over 20 mph. But at 1400 grams, they are pretty darn light and feel quick at lower speeds. I weigh 195 lbs and I get some brake rub when powering out of the saddle. At first I was disappointed, thinking I bought a flexy wheelset. But I have learned this is a common occurrence even with top tier wheels. Unlike alloy rims that tend to flex below the hub, carbon wheels are ridged enough the flex at the hub like a solid disc. I don't have a ton of miles on the wheelset, but there have been no loose or broken spokes. They are still round and true and the free hub engages quickly and sounds good while coasting. For the price I will definitely recommend.

Really good value for the money
First of all, this is a really good value for the money. For the price of a single carbon wheel, you can get a complete wheelset. The performance gains are phenomenal particularly on the flats. There are some caveats to consider though, when buying a value based wheelset and have to accept some workarounds. The rim tape/strips that come with the wheel are junk. They curl in places and don't stay put and cause problems for some tires when trying to seat them. This is a simple fix, just buy some rim tape. Not a big deal. The second issue, which is a more serious issue was seating Continental GP5000 tires. I tried for several hours to try and get the tires to seat properly but the bead would not catch to the rim on the rear wheel. This was with different tires (swapping front and back) and the back wheel/tires just would not seat properly (dipping in certain sections) causing tire wobble. The only thing that will work is to use soapy water solution around the bead before inflating and eventually the beads pop into place. There appears to be something in the wheels that catches the rubber and doesn't allow the bead edge to move to the hooks of the rims. Again, not a deal breaker but I need to carry a small container of soapy water in case I puncture. Will I buy this again? Yes and no. I actually bought the ICAN Aero 40 for my wife's bike and have to say, I was extremely happy with the quality of the ICAN Aero 40. Sure it's $200 more but in my opinion it's worth the extra $$ to get the trouble free wheel experience AND it's about 300 grams lighter.

Value. Without loss in performance.
I Have run these for more than two years now. Still running true out of the box, with no adjustments. Even with the occasional pothole that couldn’t be missed. 1400g is correct for weight. The set was about one pound lighter than the wheel set that came with my bike. They ride smooth and roll fast. I have found that cross winds seem less with this wheel set. My guess is the aero profile was doing its job. I am running 25 tires and they match the 25 rim width perfect. The included brake pads didn’t work that great. I had the local bike shop swap them for a better carbon pad set. They stop much better. These are a great wheels. A branded wheel set would have been twice the price.
