Eye in the Sky [DVD]

I like some military films, particularly if there's a complex personal story in the plot. I typically stay with the two "Great Wars", 1 and 2. But was intrigued with the plot and the amazing cast in this film.This is in a very different "era", not declared war but instead, military missions. The British led mission is to capture wanted terrorists, known to be in Kenya. That changes when they get new intel; which brings the American government and military into the plot.It has a real time feel; as if you're in the action.A wonderful cast; which includes Helen Mirren, amazing as usual. And another British actor, Alan Rickman, a favorite actor for many years, has a central role. He sadly past away, after the film was released.Definitely a film that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Watched the night we got it! As exciting as the trailer. Not disappointed

Was one of the better movies that I have seen recently. A older movie but a good one

In my view, this film makes (what I hope is) its point in spite of its every effort and, in that sense, one might say that it snatches victory from the jaws of self-defeat.Let me explain. I hope the point of this film is to portray a deeply emotional and suspenseful event in a way that is balanced enough to make all viewers less sure of their moral positions. This, in my view, would be useful both to each of us and to society as a whole.However, along the way it gives several impressions that I believe detract from the film itself. First, it gives the impression that the people at the very top (the politicos) are both mettlesome, unprepared, and incompetent. This makes the film feel throughout as if it were highly partisan Hollywood propaganda.Second, it gives the impression that the people at the drone controls are unprepared (morally, ethically, emotionally) for the consequences that naturally follow what they have chosen to do for a living. This also gives the film a superficial propagandistic feel.On the other hand, it does offer some nuggets that make sitting through this film somewhat worthwhile.First, it offers us the opportunity to reflect on the moral asymmetry that could very well doom the West and guarantee the ascendency of the radical Jihadi Islamists. They apparently care nothing about who they slaughter in the name of Allah. We fume and dither endlessly over an otherwise compelling equation: 80+ probable, innocent casualties is allegedly worth less in the in the minds of some war than one innocent casualty.If the Jihadis win by grinding down the West, this confusion in the minds of many will be one of the first reasons why. Putting people in the chain of command with every conceivable frame of reference is NOT helpful in doing what must be done to prevail against an absolutely ruthless adversary.It could be argued that making a film that self-consciously seeks to validate all such frames of reference as equally valid only advances the probability that the war, already micromanaged by self-serving politicians and bureaucrats, will be won by the Jihadis.Nonetheless, a film that makes this obvious might be useful to those leaning toward, but still uncommitted to, the surrender of the West.Another kernel of understanding suggested by this film: While Western pluralism is often a strength it has bred indecisiveness, and our indecisiveness is the hidden enabler of Jihadi success.So, was this film trying to consider any of these points or simply pander to the Anti-war crowd? I hope it was, but I have no idea... and perhaps that is the best thing (and the worst) about this film.

During WWII the USA and Britain area bombed German and Japanese cities and the civilian casualties were horrific. And remember that at that time many of those civilians were not supporters of the warrior classes in those two countries. Yet, the Allied leadership had no hesitation about killing indiscriminately. (Most of the Germans and Japanese were even less blessed with empathy when it came to targeting "enemy" civilians.) The targets were faceless and therefore not really able to trigger remorse with the crews and leadership - until perhaps after the war was over.In any case, with this movie the leadership, and needless to say the audience, became aware of the personal nature of "collateral damage" and the result was a remarkable movie. The little girl was a "person" and the reality and innocence of that person got the attention of both those in the film who were involved with making a decision about blasting some bad people to smithereens and the audience, who, assuming they had any capacity to express human emotions, found themselves being part of the movie. War is indeed hell, but it becomes an even worse hell when serious reality sinks in.One other point, there were not many negative reviews of this movie on this site, but if one reads some of them it is clear that there are people out there who have some pretty brutish and fascistic ideas about the nature of empathy. I can just see some of them being part of the crowd that stormed the US Capitol a short while back.

Keep in mind I rarely give a “5” to movies. This movies makes one appreciate the responsibility many of our young and old in the military have to deal with very often. Made me emotional and makes one think. Technology sure can be efficient and deadly but who in their right mind would want to have to decide who goes and who stays. I just know one thing I’m in love with Helen!!!. Thanks

Creo que hay dos temas a evaluar:1) La tecnologia, comparada con lo que teniamos en la segunda guerra mundial. A cuantos nos va a dejar sin trabajo y lo que hoy debieramos los padres estar enseñando a nuestros hijos para que sean utiles en la era de la nueva tecnologia.2) La fuerza de los sentimientos que luchan por imponerse sobre la razón, a la hora de tomar una decisión. Resumiendo es como cuando necesitamos darle unas nalgadas al niño para que se corrija. Nuestros sentimientos dicen no, pero la razon dice si. Y lo hacemos no por placer sino porque estamos convencidos de que es por el bien del niño a futuro. Si no tienes una foto mental de lo que quieres que tu hijo o tu logren, dificilmente tendras el valor de pasar arriba de tus sentimientos para actuar, y tu hijo pagara las consecuencias de tu cobardia.

Vieles ist richtig und vieles ist falsch. Ein Kind opfern für das Leben vieler? Der Film ist spannend bis zum Schluss und zeigt den grenzwertigen Einsatz einer Drohne, das "Abschieben" von Verantwortung und ewiges Rückversichern.Durch die Bank weg zeigen alle Schauspieler eine hervorragende Leistung, lediglich der Drohnenpilot ist meiner Meinung nach etwas überzeichnet.Trotzdem einer der besten Filme im Jahr 2016!!

Colonel Katherine Powell (Helen Mirren) leitet eine Mission, bei der in Nairobi mehrere ostafrikanische Top-Terroristen, darunter eine britische Konvertitin , gefangen genommen werden sollen.Mittels einer Mini-Drohne und einem Gesichtserkennunngsprogramm werden sie identifiziert, aber der Sturm des Gebäudes klappt nicht, da die Terroristen es verlassen und ein neues Gebäude beziehen.Es zeigt sich, dass in dem Haus große Mengen Sprengstoff gelagert sind und offensichtlich ein Selbstmordattentat geplant ist, der Sturm auf das Haus erscheint unmöglich, aber die Gruppe mit einer Hellfire-Rakete, abgefeuert von einer Kampfdrohne auszuschalten, erfordert einen neuen Einsatzplan.Powell wendet sich an den vorgesetzten Lieutenant General Frank Benson (Alan Rickman), der eine Gruppe von Politikern überzeugen muss, dass eventuelle Kollateralschäden durch den Beschuss geringer seien als zwei Selbstmotdattentate, wobei man mit ca 80 Toten rechnen müsse. Es müssen höhere Regierungsmitglieder befragt werden, die zum Teil in der Welt unterwegas sind, dem Militär läuft die Zeit davon.Als endlich der Schießbefehl erteilt werden darf, hat sich ein kleines Mädchen als Brotverkäuferin an der Außenseite der Mauer um das Zielgebäude niedergelassen. Lieutenant Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) weigert sich und fordert eine Neuberechnung des Kollateralschadenrisikos, und die Politik will es unter 50% haben.Also muss neu berechnet werden, während 2 der Terroristen schon mit dem Sprebgstoff beladen werden.In einem Krieg gibt es klare Befehlsstrukturen, in diesem "Krieg" gegen den Terrorismus ist es anders. Die Zielpersonen befinden sich in einem befreundeten Land, das mit zivilen Opfern rechnen muss, insofern steht hier nicht das militärische, sondern das politische Erwägen des Für und Wider die gößere Rolle.Und während Katherine Powell an den dauernden Verzögerungen fast verzweifelt und der Genaral auf eine sofortige Entscheidung drängt, wird dieser Druck auch fesselnd auf uns Zuschauer übertragen, der sieht, unter welcher Gefahr der Kenianer Jama Farah (Barkad Abdi) sich in die Nähe des Zielobjektes begeben hat und jederzeit damit rechnen muss, dass er als "Pilot" der hummelgroßen Drohne im Gebäude ertappt wird.Und genau wie Militärs, besonders der Pilot der Drohne und seine Kollegin, bangen auch wir um das Leben der kleinen Alia (Aisha Takow), einem fröhlichen Mädchen aus einer nicht-fundamentalistischen Familie, die ihr Vater heimlich unterrichtet und die die von der Mutter gebackenen Fladenbrote verkauft. Wir zittern , dass schnell genug Kunden kommen, damit die Kleine ihre Brote los wird und sich aus dem Gefahrengebiet entfernen kann. Und als am Ende der Vorgesetzte des Drohnenpiloten und seiner Kameradin beide in den Feierabend entlässt mit dem Hinweis, beide werden in 12 Stunden wieder gebraucht, wissen wir, die beiden sind fix und fertig.Die militärischen Notwendigkeiten und die politischen und juristischen Bedenken und Verhandlungen unter enormem Zeitdruck fesseln uns bei diesem Thriller wie selten ein Film vor den Bildschirm. Mit diesem Satz endet Gavin Hoods Film -Eye In The Sky-. Aber ist das wirklich so? Da kann man geteilter Meinung sein. Hood hat sich den „Drohnenkrieg“ als Thema genommen und einen fiktiven Einsatz in Nairobi inszeniert, bei dem hochrangige Terroristen eliminiert werden sollen. Die Chance, diese Terroristen zu erwischen ist minimal und plötzlich ist sie da. Was zunächst als Festnahmeaktion gedacht war, ändert sich schnell zum Tötungseinsatz. Aus dem Londoner Hauptquartier steuert Colonel Katherine Powell(Helen Mirren) die Aktion. Die Drohne wird von den taktischen Piloten Watts(Aaron Paul) und Gershon(Phobe Fox) gesteuert. In die Entscheidung eingebunden sind Lieutenant Benson(Alan Rickman) und ein Stab von Politikern. Als der Einsatz der Drohnenraketen wegen zu hohen Kollateralschäden in Frage gestellt wird, traut sich kein politisch Verantwortlicher eine Entscheidung zu treffen. Powell und ihre Militärkollegen wollen unbedingt zuschlagen, die Drohnenpiloten haben Bedenken. Mehrere Minister und letztendlich auch der Premier werden um Entscheidung gebeten und die Zeit läuft gnadenlos ab. Am Ende geht es um ein kleines Mädchen und die Frage der Moral...Gavin Hood hat das ziemlich gut hinbekommen. Seine Story wandelt zwischen Kammerspiel und Actionfilm hin und her. Mit Helen Mirren und Alan Rickman, bei einem seiner letzten Auftritte, kann man nicht viel verkehrt machen. Was Hood vor allem gut hinbekommen hat ist die holprig-amateurhafte Führung des Einsatzgeschehens. Am Stammtisch kann man über solche Einsätze reden, aber in Wirklichkeit eine Entscheidung zu treffen, die Menschenleben kostet, ist eine ganz andere Geschichte. Letztendlich präsentiert uns Hood eine „Auge um Auge“-Story die vor allem durch die unnachgiebig handelnde Katherine Powell moralische Fragen aufwirft.Für Freunde reiner Actionfilme wird -Eye In The Sky- kein Volltreffer werden. Für einen hintergründigen Politthriller passt die Geschichte auch nicht ganz. -Eye In The Sky- liegt irgendwo dazwischen. Der Film greift ein aktuelles Thema auf und ist gnadenlos spannend.
