The Last Poet of the Village: Selected Poems by Sergei Yesenin Translated by Anton Yakovlev

I has never heard of this poet. His early 20th century poems give us insight into the world between Zsarist Russia and the beginning of the Soviet Union. I am a high school English teacher and am planning to share it with our school's Russian teacher. Maybe we could get together for an interdisciplinary lesson!

I ordered what is on the cover. As shown on the pictures the content does not match the cover.

This is a large selection of Yesenin's poems and they are very well translated, so useful for the interested reader with a limited knowledge of Russian. I do have a problem with the formatting of the text in Kindle: when I select a word and go to search the web (so as to use an online dictionary to get more information about pronunciation or conjugations) the word is not always copied correctly. But this does not detract from the excellence of the book itself.

Translation accuracy is important, but it is critical when it comes to poems. I felt that the translation was very true to Sergei. Although reading it in Russian or Serbian or Bosnia can never be replicated, Yakovlev does a very good job.If you never read Sergei, this is a must have. He was one of the best poets of all times. His poem Letter to Mother will rip your heart out.
