I really wanted to like this! It's a great idea
I really wanted to like this! It's a great idea...but, without a way to secure the cap, you will lose it eventually if you carry this on your key chain. The first week I had it, I tightened both screw pieces as tight as I could. By the end of the week, I hear something fall and found the end cap had come loose. Unlike my key chain bullet lighter, this has no rubber gasket to hold it in place. So I put it back on a again tightened it as tightly as I could get it. Today I noticed it is gone. Completely gone. Probably won't buy another one. Seriously suggest that you put a gasket on both areas that unscrew if you plan to daily carry this item.*UPDATE 12/2/16*Vendor contacted me after this review, apologized for the faulty tool and offered a replacement. EXCELLENT response, excellent customer service. Also said they'd look into a better means of securing the screw sections. Change to five stars because of this response. And I tightened the cap as tight as I could get it, and it's still there.

Cool Multi-purpose Fire Starter
I bought my dad a similar item last year. They're great to have for several reasons. The first is if you ever get trapped in a building or vehicle, you can use one of these to bust through a window and escape. There are videos out there that can show you how to do it, and these tools work great if used properly. The other thing I really like about this is that you can start a fire fairly quickly with this. Just disassemble the unit, take the flint rod and the scrapper blade, and do a full stroke with a decent amount of pressure all the way down the rod and you should get a nice spark. Just remember to swipe it away from you so you don't get any sparks on your clothes. Lastly, the unit is small and can snap right on your key chain, making it convenient to access in a pinch.

Solid, functions exactly as described. A few nice extra features.
Hoping to do a lot more camping/hiking in the future, so I'm stocking up on all sorts of outdoor stuff. A part of that collection is this little guy. About 3/4 the size of an average pen/pencil, and roughly the same thickness—this magnesium fire starter works just as advertised. It's built fairly well, a strong enough metal housing which splits into 4 pieces. In my photos I didn't show it, but the tip of it also comes apart to reveal a very small ball of cotton to help with starting a fire. The tip is meant to be used as an emergency glass breaking device. Just stab at a windshield, and it should shatter with ease. I don't have any spare windows laying around so I couldn't confirm, but I've seen similar items used very successfully.Using the thing was simple. It did take me a handful of strokes to get actual sparks to fly, but once I got the magnesium scratched up a bit, it was great. Sparked each and every time. The nice thing is that the flint itself also unscrews and is presumably replaceable. Haven't looked into additional replacement kits, but honestly, I can't see myself going through this entire rod anytime soon. One thing I would have liked to see is more room for the kindling or cotton. Make the entire compartment longer. I also thought this extra long space could be a perfect place to store a few matches for "just in case" scenarios. Make it waterproof by adding a rubber gasket and you'd be good to go.For now, it's going into my "outdoor backpack" and I can't wait to use it more! Works great, solid build, I'm a fan.

This Excellent Firestarter Is a Lifesaver I Hope I'll Never Need
If you've ever read "To Build a Fire," an exciting and grim short story by American author Jack London, you know how the ability to start a fire can be a matter of life or death. That's why if I find myself in such a tight spot, this is the tool I'd like to have in my pocket. It can get a fire going in almost any weather, and you won't have to do anything hopeless like rubbing two sticks together in a snowstorm when you've run out of matches. The firestarter works when you first unscrew the end with the loop on it, and there's a jagged edge that's used to scrape a magnesium rod. After a few strikes, I easily got sparks to fly! There's a helpful piece of highly flammable cotton-like material hidden in another compartment on the other side of this pen. Its function is to give you something flammable enough to help start a fire with those flying sparks -- if you can't find any dryer lint or dry leaves or twigs lying around to help get a fire going. An added bonus is the pointy end, designed to smash a window if the car goes into the water. It's built into the end of this pen-like object, ready for a quick smash and I'm free.Geez, I hope I never need this little gem. But it has earned a place with my other emergency items in a go-bag that I also hope to never use.

Small and light, works, and useful!
I'm a critical transport nurse which means I also fly patients by jet and helicopter. I was looking for another emergency supply device for survival if my aircraft went down. This is light and small, like an ink pen and fits in my pocket nicely. I used it during one of our survival trainings this week to shave magnesium into collected materials we could find off the ground. It sparked and could start a fire. Although it is difficult to start and KEEP a fire after it has rained I'm glad I will have a useful tool. I also have to say that I was in a situation this week whereas I felt threatened (on my day off work), and I happened to have it in my purse. I gripped it in my hand to use as a weapon if need be and was confident it could also serve as temporary weapon if need be.

When you love the outdoors you need to be prepare for anything
I try and stay prepared for anything and I love the outdoors, so when I came across this item I had to give it a try. I must say it is a very sturdy/durable product. I can see it lasting for years, protected from rain and other elements that may degrade it. I did have a hard time breaking a glass bottle, however, the bottle was very thick. I easily made some tiny punctures but did not break through. I'm sure if it were a window or glass that was a bit thinner it would work perfectly. As for the fire starter, I did get a few sparks but nothing substantial. I'll probably need to "play" with it a bit more to get the correct wrist action and pressure needed to actually start a fire. I do wish there was a set of instructions/video to show the proper way to hold and use it.
