An elite team of mercenaries is hired for a covert operation, deep inside a former Soviet state. Arriving at an underground laboratory, their mission is to secure specimens of genetically engineered human and alien hybrids. Battling with a ferocious armed militia as well as dark, menacing creatures, the odds of survival are stacked against them.

DON'T BRING A SYRINGE TO A GUN FIGHT
A group of 8 mercenaries break into an isolated secret Eastern Block facility on a mission to obtain/destroy a project deep inside a maze. The film is marketed as "Scintilla" and "The Hybrid." It isn't hard to figure out from the titles and DVD cover we are talking about some kind of human hybrid. Yes and PLOT SPOILER EXPLANATION OF FILM the DNA they cross humans with, is from a 2.4 billion year old meteor found in the Soviet permafrost. Forgetting the fact DNA breaks down, they cross it with human DNA and plan on getting an offspring from two hybrids that is more alien than human because....we can.The characters were fine. I wish they had expanded them a bit more. Their entrance into the facility was good scene and started the feature off with promise. The maze wasn't too bad, but they could have made that better and the last third which was hurt by low budget.Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Suspenseful & Creative
Surprised at the negative reviews here. This movie is very underrated, imho. It's very suspenseful, and you have no idea what it's about or what they will find. There are some great twists, too.Very conservative use of CGI, but has a lot of impact.....chilling.Wish they followed up with a sequel or two if they would keep the same director& screen play writer, etc.Low budget, but they used it wisely & with great effect.Great all around.

The Hybrid
*** Spoilers Ahead, Most definitely*** The movie starts out interesting enough.I was really curious to see what the mercenaries were going to find when they made it into the bunker on their way to the underground laboratory. On the way down when they encountered the 1950's alien looking guards, I thought if the things outside of the laboratory look like this, I can't wait to see what the hybrids inside the laboratory look like. When I finally get to see the hybrids, the only thing I'm thinking is that's it? The alien on the movie poster looked better than the hybrids did. After that, the movie became boring.Things did pick up again but there was only 15 minutes left in the movie so...... Here's the spoiler, in the end, when the mercenary leader had a shot to kill the hybrid, he didn't take it & let him escape.I don't get it.It just didn't make any sense at all.I did kinda like the finale when the hybrid was walking in the city because it leaves the movie open to a sequel.Even though I really wasn't that into The Hybrid I'd be interested to see how the story continues if there is one.The Hybrid isn't a movie I'd go searching for but if you come across it & you can see it for free then why not?

All that Potential Gone to Waste
Too much walking in woods and down dark stairways and through underground halls and not enough intrigue. It is a good movie if you are watching it with friends and can critique it as you go along. As in "What are they doing?" Why are they doing that?" Well, that was dumb!" Et cetera. After all the woods and dark hallways you get to the science labs walls all covered in plastic everywhere. Talk about low budget set dressing. There is just enough interesting stuff going on to make you wish the writers had been a little more thoughtful in their story. Background expose for the aliens was so lacking that I could not invest myself in what the heck was really going on. This really needs to be put into a tv series so each little snippet of scene that we got could have been expanded on. For instance, the strange people in the underground hallways. The injections that change people into something else. The alien that dies. The alien that escapes. The man who starts the movie eating a sandwich and ends the movie eating a sandwich. And what really happened to the computer tech who ended up in a blue dress?I'd say, watch the movie so you can see all the potential it had but didn't use.

Tense SF Adventure that's a scratch above the average
I feel slightly mean giving 'The Hybrid' (aka 'Scintilla') only three stars, but I don't think it's quite a four- so let's say 3.5. This may still seem low, but given the dreadful standard of SF cinema over the last 15 years, this is a high rating for me. I'll qualify this further by saying that anyone serious about their SF (especially if you actually read the stuff and go beyond formulaic space opera) should give this a try. It's five minutes in the future. Our story begins with a mercenary being tortured in an unidentified prison. Pulled out of his cell and confronted by an old colleague, he is offered a mission by a corporation, leading his old team. Next thing we know we're in the former Soviet Union (but not in Russia) and a tense covert half-hour breaching of a local warlord's outpost follows: beneath this complex is a bit of research that the corporation is paying big bucks to recover...I'll say no more than this. The settings are a bit different, there is some good acting and some tight writing and the SF concept -though basic - is well-executed and entertaining to those with brains and there is a terse, tense climax.I was first drawn to this film by its original, superior title: 'Scintilla' is far more interesting than 'The Hybrid' (which merely sounds generic). Although it won't change your life, for a good solid bit of SF entertainment that doesn't insult the intelligence, go for it...
