There's the right way, the wrong way and the Army way. But there's no way military investigator Paul Brenner (John Travolta) is going to participate in a cover-up when Fort MacCallum officials try to hide the motive behind the murder of a beautiful female officer. Travolta's magnetic performance sparks this riveting thriller from the director of Con Air and the producer of The Hunt for Red October. Madeleine Stowe plays Brenner's co-investigator and former flame. And James Cromwell, Timothy Hutton, Clarence Williams III and James Woods are among the suspects in this "steamy game of cat and mouse that will keep you guessing until the surprising explosive ending." --Sandie Newton, CBS-TV.

The Truth About Coruption in the Military
In the military, it's all about career, and I've seen personally how officers and non-commissioned officers (sergeants) will betray their own men in the pursuit of their careers. What male soldiers will do to our own female soldiers is bad enough, but when we're in other countries and they think they can get away with it, they do even worse; namely, not only rape but murder and torture as well.Movies about corruption, whether based on a real event or not, are based upon the truth about society in general. If you believe the respectable facades you see around you, you are naive.

You can guess the gist of the story right from the start
General’s Daughter is a murder mystery featuring John Travolta and Madeleine Stowe as two Army criminal investigators who are called in to look into the death of General Joseph Campbell’s (James Cromwell) daughter. As can be expected the woman had a dark side which the general wants to cover-up. This is also the major problem with the story. As soon as it starts you can guess where it’s going. That doesn’t mean you can figure out all the exact ins and outs of what happens but you get the main points right from the start. What good is a mystery if it’s that transparent? The story also tries to throw in some commentary about sexism against women in the military but it gets destroyed by the bad plot.C

A compelling and riveting murder mystery, well acted and great script. Five stars!
One of the best Travolta movies ever. He is so talented as a dramatic actor with the occasional droll humor injected here and there to lighten the scenes. And Madeleine Stowe was also superb. The script was fantastic and I won't say this is a feel-good movie, but the solving of the murder mystery was extremely compelling and satisfying. I was riveted to every scene.

disturbing and base
I read the book long before the movie was released. When the movie came out, I was not inclined to go see it. It's difficult to put in to words how I feel about this subject matter. Using the graphic rape and terrorization of a woman as a plot basis for profit is disturbing. You could argue that the film is about a hero uncovering truth but it doesn't deliver, dramatically , on that point. The end is not satisfying. The plot twists are ridiculous. The cast of actors finally drew me to watch the film. The male military officers are well acted. Besides the victim, the only other female role is the detective's sidekick. She has a couple of good lines and lots of dramatic looks and standing about but nothing special nor memorable.I do not recommend this movie.

Awful.
I'm always stunned by the numbers of good reviews of bad bad movies like this. Except for Travolta, who I actually felt sorry for because he had absolutely nothing to work with here, (bad co-actors, bad robotic dialog, a bad script with a predictable plot overall). The insufferable sexism continually thrown at us by Hollywood - you know - the idea that intelligent, successful, powerful women can't be any of those things unless they look like supermodels as well - is fully at play here. Yikes, there's a part of the movie where Madeleine Stowe - (who is a terrible, terrible actress) - get's jumped, held down on concrete, and bloodied - but the very next day - her perfectly chiseled face doesn't have a single scratch on it. OK! THANK YOU FOR THAT! Anyway, one last, but absolutely not least, thing. I increasingly find these kinds of films offensive and sexist - where there are continual, gratuitous scenes of naked women, dog tied and hog tied and splayed out for the world to see - and, of course, all while horrible violence is being done to them - and all in the name of "realism". In a film like this, that's otherwise so silly and pedestrian (definitely not gritty/true to life) all that that stuff is there for, and good for, is titillation. These films are an affront to all women. I mean how are they any better than porn/snuff films?

Well crafted, but a bit disappointing.
Well crafted, but full of military and sexual tropes. Travolta was a bit less annoying than some of his other parts, and Madeleine Stowe did a great job balancing the various aspects of her character. The supporting cast did well but, the whole time, I found it difficult to like any of the characters. The camera loves Leslie Stefanson and, even though her role in the film was small, I think she could have an interesting acting career if she wanted to pursue it. Even the big finish was a bit disappointing, resting on an obscure technicality.

Entertaining without any real surprises
A feast for John Travolta fans with a delicious side dish of Madeleine Stowe and a superb performance by James Woods as a truly formidable suspect. James Cromwell as the aloof father is found to be a truly despicable person. The plot takes place in a typical southern Army post where a beautiful but sick daughter of the base commander has been brutally murdered on post leading to an entertaining investigation by Travolta and Stowe as Army CID officers. There are ample twists and surprises for most fans of the genre and the actors and the picture is generally well done. Even the end when justice is served is predictable by satisfying.Over time this has become one of my favorite films to watch over and over.

Cinematic Interpretation of the Book, Entertaining.
I love it when books I enjoyed turned into movies I can enjoy. This was a departure from the book but still a very entertaining interpretation of the Nelson DeMille Book.

ATMOSPHERIC
This film got a lot of poor reviews, mainly I think because the critics don't like John Travolta. He's good in this. He comes across as a rather obnoxious wiseass but that's the character he's playing. The film is a very compressed and simplified version of the subtle, nuanced and complex novel on which it's based, and can't resist going for big visual scenes which don't appear in the book, but that's the movies for you. Also great soundtrack which enhances the steamy, Deep South atmosphere. Why don't they film more of de Mille's great books?

Typical Nelson deMille story, sort of!
Having read the book by Nelson deMille, I felt I needed to see how similar to the book it was...not bad, as converting a book into a screenplay for about two hours is a difficult task at the best of times. There were about three changes, but, if you haven't actually read the book, don't worry, the film was very good. John Travolta was - as usual - brilliant, as our eponymous hero. Cracking good read.

Brilliant film
John Travolta shows he can really act in this film. Saw it at the cinema and knew straight away that I would want to see it again.
