this reel does not have centrifugal brakes
This reel does not have centrifugal brakes. It does have dual brakes. It has magnetic brakes and it also has some plastic pins that can be turned on or off that rub against a journal on the spool axel (friction brakes?), but these pins are not attached to the spool. They are attached to the same side plate that has the magnetic brakes. Since they don't spin with the spool, centrifugal force can not affect them. This means that they don't don't only work at high rpms like real centrifugal breaks do. At first I thought the company intentionally lied about the reel having centrifugal brakes, but then I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that whoever wrote up the discription just didn't know what centrifugal means. I could be wrong on the whole centrifugl thing though. If someone can explain to me how those little pins are affected by centrifugal force, I'll admit my error, but I think I'm right. The reel looks nice and feels pretty solid. I was afraid it would feel like a cheap plastic toy, but it doesn't. That's why I didn't send it back when I discovered that it didn't have centrifugal brakes. The operation of the reel (turning the handle and pulling in lures) is very smooth. I especially like the feel of the crank handle. It is a large handle the the knobs are large and have a nice texture. On the first few casts, I had major problems with backlashing. It was like the brakes didn't work at all even when turned up all the way. I took off the side plate and loosened the two tiny screws that hold the magnets in place a little (maybe a half turn?). This moved the magnets closer to the spool and made the magnetic brakes work better and I think I will get some good use out of this reel. I am taking off one star for this since I should not have had to do that and it may cause problems in the future if those screws back out anymore on their own.
