This knife is not laser-etched although it is almost certainly acid-etched as are most Damascus blades. Not really true Damascus, but rather probably a pre-fabricated layered steel with a hard cutting core. I have about 5 of this type of chef knife and all have layered metal with a hard cutting core and this one is as good as if not better than the others and is less expensive by a mile.This knife is sharp as hell, holds a good edge and is beautiful, but will need to be sharpened occasionally like every other knife known to mankind. Do yourself a favor and buy a good sharpener to go with this incredibly great kitchen knife.10.23.22: Been using this for about 2 weeks and I can guarantee that this knife cuts like a razor blade and I've only had to hone it once on a ceramic steel. For the price it's a work of art that is fully functional at a ridiculously low price.

$20 for any VG10 or Chinese equivalent is steal (no pun intended). It came sharp out of the box. That it has a classic, clean aesthetic and nicely rounded handle feel is icing on the cake. It weights about 228 grams with a balance point where the bolster tapers - about center between the blade and handle. It feels pretty light and balanced to me. I don't I think I use knives enough like a pro chef to really know what to look for, but I like light knives with the balance point more towards the blade (I pinch grip the blade in front of the bolster). The fit and finish of the blade seems perfect, but there was some very minor inconsistent gaps where the bolster means the handle - I mean you really have to look for it to see it.This knife is 90% of what I'd consider perfect, but for the price it is 110%.

First off, to address the bad reviews of others that don't have a clue; the "damascus" is real. In that there is a cladding of steel alloy that was pattern forge welded and san mai'd on top of the core material. That said, it is more than likely NOT VG10 but what the Chinese say is equivalent. This is because Japan no longer and hasn't exported VG10 steel to China in a long time. They also have sanctions for non Chinese companies that try to smuggle some to them. China basically uses 9CR15MOV or 10CR15MOV steel and call it it VG10 because it is like 99.99% metallurgicly the same. I have some crappy laser etched fake "damascus" pattern knives that I keep around to show people the difference. It is pretty easy to tell real fakes from the real deal once you have enough experience in owning knives like this.Other than that, the knife is beautiful to look at and behold. It comes sharp and hasn't been chippy for me at least, which means the heat treatment on mine is good. The later is the real downside to most Chinese made knives with this type of steel. Many of these knives are made with real pattern welded steel and then put in ferric acid to produce the pattern; however, the don't always do a good job with heat treatment. In my experience it either isn't even (causing uneven wear when used on the edge) or done in a way to make it far more chip prone than it should be.

The handle is very pretty and the knife feels relatively solid. Now, the blade pattern is very clearly FAKE DAMASCUS STEEL. This is a cheap laser-etched version. Kind of shocked that the seller would think people would really fall for this. Come on.

Purchased as a gift. What showed up was some cheap made in China thing. Resembled the pic, but a truly cheap version of it.
