Q: Is this sharpened for ripping or cross-cutting?

Neither. It's a dovetail saw. I guess it's more geared toward a rip cut, but this saw isn't made for ripping or cross cutting. I use it for dovetails and a quick cut when needed. But if I'm making a rip or crosscut, I use the preferred saw.

Q: How does it compare to the Japanese Z saw?

Both are quitre different.While this saw wors on the push, the handle is cylindrical, the japanese works on the pull and the handle is more ergonomit. My suggestion is always go with the japanese, unless you are skilled with western gent saws

Q: is the saw blade sharp out of the box or does it need to be sharpened before use

It is sharp, as delivered. In fact, the teeth are so fine, it will be hard to sharpen by hand, as I do my other hand saws.
