A Charming Duke Leads the Cast of Characters
This book for me was a little scattered. I had expected it to be a continuation of book one and Lori Shepard. This was what I would call a stand alone book. While there isn't a murder as such, the story plays matchmaker to an American woman who doesn't believe in love or marriage, A duke racing to find a lantern, a widower who after 5 yrs still mourns his wife and an assortment of other interesting characters in the castle and the town.I have come late to enjoying the Aunt Dimity books and not sure how I didn't find them sooner but with 24 in the series I know I will have much enjoyment coming my way

Not what I expected
This was my first (and LAST) Aunt Dimity book. I read the glowing reviews, checked the sample, and was excited to start reading. The beginning was wonderful. I was totally into the strangely wonderful characters and the plot was rolling along nicely. Then, everything started to slow waaay down and my interest started to lag. Still, I plugged along because I wanted to meet Aunt Dimity. By 60% and no Aunt Dimity, I was starting to get irked. When the conclusion to the "mystery" came, it was SO stupid and contrived, that I nearly threw my kindle. Still, I kept on...waiting for Aunt Dimity. Well, I finished the thing and have to say that I will not read another one. A book with Aunt Dimity in the title and no Aunt Dimity just doesn't make me happy.

A Pleasant Surprise
I'm not sure quite what I expected, and reading them out of order began to start the confusion but seemed to actually add to the fun, at least it did once I figured out about Aunt Dimity and how she fit into the plot. This series by Nancy Atherton is a fast and fun read. The characters (the two children - one complete with teddy bear, the vain celebrity, a boisterous agent) could easily have been written by Agatha Christie or Ngaio Marsh. The countryside setting (a forgotten chapel in a forlorn English seaside town) is also a throwback to the golden age of English cottage mysteries. But Ms. Atherton has her characters living in the present time (complete with mobile phone and lap top computers) but this does nothing to diminish the quaint feeling I got reading THE DUKE.If you enjoy intelligently written and plotted mysteries, I heartily recommend Ms. Atherton's AUNT DIMITY entries.

Best second book in a series EVER.
While most series authors decide to follow their first book successful formula, Nancy Atherton decided to do something different - very different. Just as engaging, just as endearing & just as much fun, this mystery within a mystery is tethered to the first book by friendship, not by formula. I'm really not sure which book I like better. Brava, author!!

Book deserves 5 stars, minus 1 for poor proofreading
I really enjoyed this book, which more closely acqaints the reader with a key character who appears in several subsequent books that I had already read. Non-spoiler hint: she isn't the Duke! However, the poor proofreading marred my pleasure, like having a wrinkle in the rug trip you up while carrying a full glass of water. The word "c o r n e r" was more than once spelled "comer" (the phrase "all comers" was properly spelled in the same paragraph in one instance) and the word "will" (guessing from the context) was spelled "wih" which is not even an English word. Also, random letters were occasionally superscripted, usually the letter "y".

As described
Book was as described, a bit worn but to be expected of a well used library book. It arrived quickly.

Delightful cozy mystery series
The first time I discovered an Aunt Dimity tale I instantly fell in love with the setting, the characters, and how the mystery is woven throughout. Aunt Dimity novels are now among my favorites. I won't give the plot line away, nor should I, but I will say that it is a quick read that will have you interested, scratching your head and reaching for reference materials to enhance your reading pleasure, and absolutely delighted overall. Absolutely lovely!

An Aunt Dimity Prequel
This is a great story but Aunt Dimity is still alive, living and working in London. Once you have gotten your head around that, you won't be wondering why Aunt Dimity isn't writing in Lori's notebook. It also explains how Emma came to be living in Finch. This is a good read - I finished it in one sitting!
