Wonderful coming-of-age story
A treasure of a coming-of-age story. Isabelle's encounters with her cousins, wonderful Aunt Beth, and a host of adults and elderly set her on a summer of growth that's full of surprises and sadness and healing. I love that the book doesn't shy away from pain—whether it's teenage angst, parental conflict, or aging. At the same time, the pain is touched by a tapestry of love and great humor. In fact, it's the old folks who are the quirkiest characters, the ones Isabelle learns the most from. The Wisdom Palace reminded me (as its premise suggests) of a kind of summer camp for all ages, where life is condensed and growth is accelerated. Loved it!
