These diary entries by a soldier serving in the17th Maine Infantry during the Civil War embed you with the troops as they fight, regroup, and scrounge for supplies. The narrative is straightforward and compelling. A little humor here and there serves to round out the vivid portraits of his compatriots and the officers leading them. Although it has the occasional slow spot, it's still worth five stars because of the intimate nature of Pvt. Haley's account of the war.

Present all the time." -- this says it all about John Haley, aside from the fact that he's sharp as a tack, insightful, humorous, and (unless I've greatly misjudged people of the 1860s) frankly ahead of his time in many ways!As someone who lived in Maine for several years, I loved the local history and the clear pride he had for the soldiers and (some) officers from Maine. Affirmation is not something Haley gave out easily, and I have to say, I puffed my chest out a few times myself!I enjoyed this account, and I'm going to miss my time with Haley and Company I, 17th Maine.

Albeit used this tome is in excellent condition far better than expected.

A must read for Civil War buffs. If you think you know anything about the Civil War and have not read this book you have missed the boat. This is an amazing personal account lasting the four years of the war. Read it, if you know of a similar soldiers bio North or South as good as this one let me know and I will read it. I have read the hard cover, gifted the soft cover and now have the kindle version.

Very interesting soldiers diary- Many humorous and interesting anecdotes and written in a classically 19th century sardonic tone. A “Company Aych” from the Union perspective.

My husband really enjoyed this book. He's been reading Civil War related books for 20 years now and thought this one was one of the best he's read...he kept reading me passages out of it.
