There have been many collections of these pre Simon & Garfunkel releases but this is the first chronological compilation to feature all of their commercially released singles between 1957 and 1961. Includes tracks originally recorded as Tom & Jerry, Jerry Landis, Artie Garr and Tico & The Triumphs plus rare solo singles from both Art and Paul. The music on this disc is a far cry from the music that Simon and Garfunkel produced over the past forty years yet all of it captures the American Pop music world in the years just before the Pop British invasion better than any greatest hits collection of the era ever could. Fully detailed liner notes with biography and career achievements.

Wonderful stuff. Not all classics (to say the least) but you could hear the germs of what became an amazing collaboration. Why are these kind of collections only available from UK labels? How about a collection of Lou Reed's early songwriting efforts ('Do the Ostrich')?

EARLY PAUL SIMON AND ART GARFUNKEL-SOLO AND DUO
As every Simon & Garfunkel fan knows, these are many (most) of their first recordings-solo and duo-from their earliest days. The years covered are 1957-1961. This is the first set (as far as I know) that has released these sides in chronological order, which is helpful and interesting to hear the progression of both singers. There's about an hours worth of music, along with a fairly informative tri-fold booklet, that lays out the foundations for the tunes. The sound is the best I've heard, considering the period and budget, and is fine overall. This collection contains most of the important sides that both Simon and Garfunkel recorded under various monikers. The lyrics and arrangements are pure pop-before The Beatles (and others) changed music forever. Included are innocent pop songs ("Teenage Fool", True Taylor), a couple of rockabilly tunes ("True Or False", by True Taylor), and the influential Everley Brothers sound ("Our Song", by Tom & Jerry)-both vocally and in the arrangements. And the lyrics to "Just A Boy" (Jerry Landis), wow. The other side of the coin is "Forgive Me" (Artie Garr), with some somber, melancholy lyrics. This is a weeper. "Private World", by Artie Garr, is reminiscent of later Simon & Garfunkel. "Motorcycle", by Tico And The Triumphs has some early rock 'n' roll sax and a revving engine in the background. And Tico isn't Paul Simon-it's Marty Cooper, another band member. And of course, perhaps the most well known tune here, "Hey Schoolgirl", by Tom & Jerry.A few years ago many of these songs were released on the Burning Airline label, with better (yet hard to read) notes and okay/good sound. The songs weren't in chronological order like this Jasmine set, but you also get songs not on this new issue. The earlier set contains a second version of "Beat Love" (Artie Garr), "Flame" (Jerry Landis), "The Lone Teen Ranger" (Jerry Landis, 1962) which just missed this issues's cut-off year 1961, "Tia-Juana Blues" (credited to Simon & Garfunkel-it's not), and "Simon Says" (Tom & Jerry). This is innocent/black & white/mono/teenage era music, before everything exploded into vivid colors and "crazy" sounds in the early/mid 60's. Besides that, it's fun to listen to these sides, and then play "Wednesday Morning 3 AM", or "Bookends", and hear how the duo had grown and morphed into one of the best acts of the 60's and beyond. If you don't already own these tunes, and are interested in the early sounds of these two singers, you might want to check this out. Will it be something that stays on your stereo? Probably not. But when you're in the mood, it's pretty cool.

Paul Sure was Busy before Simon and Garfunkel
I'm rating this CD for what it is - in no way comparing it with Simon and Garfunkel recordings. It's a collection of singles made by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, sometimes together as Tom and Jerry, some solo recordings by both, and a few recordings by Paul when he was briefly with two other groups. The CD is predominantly Paul Simon, but that's just because he was more active in the music world during this period (1957-1961) than Artie Garfunkel was. Also, I love the fact that the recordings play chronologically so you can follow the progression of both singers, and there are good liner notes. The sound quality is great - I was really surprised that it was so good. For Simon and Garfunkel fans, this is just a fun CD.It seems that collections of early recordings by Paul and Artie are just coming out of the woodwork now - some of which contain questionable material. But unless you are really some ultra fanatic fan of Simon and Garfunkel, I don't see any reason to buy more than one just so you can say, "Hey, this is Simon and Garfunkel before they were Simon and Garfunkel." Let's face it - just how many times do you think you will listen to this CD. This one is really representative of their early work, so, if you want just that one early recording, I would say this is definitely the one to buy.Oh, the picture on the cover - I really think that's early Simon and Garfunkel, but if you want to see what Tom and Jerry looked like, there's a nice photo on the Amazon.com listing for the CD, Tom and Jerry (1957-1960) Remastered (search Tom and Jerry Simon and Garfunkel)

First class CD
If you like the Everly Brothers then you will love this its Tom and Jerry folks not the cartoon type but the duet before they became Simon and Garfunkel. These guys were very much into the Everlys and wanted to sound like them when they were teenagers and they do a great job at that with each track a gem especially the "Hey Little School Girl" track all very 50s early 60s sounding pop tunes with great harmony interaction, nothing like their later folk rock material but if your into this type of music as I am you will love it. Good fair price on Amazon too.
