Disappointed in the cruelty of the Spanish explorers
I had read of the Lewis and Clark explorations and expected something similar of the Hernando de Soto travels. However, I overlooked that his purpose was greed and his method was fear inspired by cruelty. There was hardly a killing method that was not used. The contrast of their brutality to their claim to be Christian, was stark.I was pleased to be able to read an English translation from the Spanish diary of de Soto's Secretary, written in the mid 1500s. Following each chapter are italicized updates from historians, etc. with information learned since the 1500s. I liked being able to think that I know where each large tribe existed, such as Rome and Cartersville, GA, Tallahassee, FL, Childersburg and Selma, AL, for examples. The search for gold was de Soto's single, overriding motivation.

Story
Wish the story would have been longer. Good read. Love the kindle books and the history books are my favorite
