In the Pink: Dorothy Draper--America's Most Fabulous Decorator

BIG, BOLD, AND BAROQUE
"Flamboyant" is usually code for gay men... but it suits Dorothy Draper to a 'T'. Over-the-top, theatrical, and utterly fearless use of huge scale in the Hollywood Regency style, her commercial installations remind one of movie sets in the 30s and 40s. Even if not one's personal taste, Draper's big and bold sense of scale is a lesson that can be applied to virtually any interior today. Surprisingly, she was able to scale down to more modest interiors as well, wanting to impart taste to average American homeowners in the post-war period.I take issue with one reviewer's dislike of so many black/and white archival images. It's exactly what one would expect from the period during which she worked. My own minor gripe is with the book designer's typography. Text would be easier to read in a different font and with increased line spacing.

Absolutely gorgeous book
It took a while for me to finally decide to drop that kind of coin on a book, but its absolutely gorgeous and worth the price. Very cool to page through and see her imprint on decorating and design through the 30's up to now. You page through a Domino magazine and see a cool black and white modern print on a white french chair and think 'wow' and then you page through the book and see that she was doing it in the 40's. Just makes me wish I had my own chandelier fabricator and my own master plasterer as those seem to be her tricks of the trade. Beautifully put together and one of the few decorating books I actually wanted to READ every word and not just page through for the pretty pics.

Love this beautiful picture book.
Dorothy Draper created the most beautiful, lavish American interior design from a most nostalgic period. I wanted to see big, rich-in-color, photography of as many examples of her work as possible, and this large coffee-table sized book does not ddisappoint. Dreamy, & brings back beautiful memories of a stay in an old Southern hotel with interiors designed by Draper. Her rooms had taken my breath away. Her name & style became etched on my brain forever.

This Book Is A "Must Have"
For all design professionals, modernism addicts, and even the layperson. The book is filled with wonderful images culled from a lifetime of decorating. Dorothy Draper's style was always fancyful, playful and above all else comfortable~she was not a devotee of the Eames pared down sterile and functional school of design. If you are done with Danish, numb over Knoll, and way past Panton~~~check out "In the Pink: Dorothy Draper: America's Most Fabulous Decorator" she will have you going for Baroque!

Dorothy Draper: America's Designer
We just got back from an anniversary trip to The Greenbrier. The work of Dorothy Draper there is remarkable. Excellent book to honor her work.

Go For Baroque
Although I like Neo-Baroque even more than the next guy, this book tends to lend creed to the saying "A lot is too much". The tongue-in-cheek style of Ms Draper is more appropriate to resorts where people want to have fun than to residences where the owners would undoubtedly get tired of looking at it day to day, and fortunately hotels and restaurants seem to be the most common clients. I liked the black & white photos, thinking them more interesting than the color illustrations with the garishness being a distraction. The title of "America's most fabulous decorator" would be arguable at best, but certainly Dorothy Draper had talent to please the general public of the mid-century. This book is recommended for those interested in the history of interior design.
