Spliff Radio Show

I transferred this from vinyl to mp3, and can't tell you how great it sounds. There are other reviews on here, but I picked this up when I was in Germany in 7th grade, around 1982. A kid on my German soccer team suggested it.As others have said here, there is a wide variety of music, power pop, almost rockin' disco, reggae, punk/new wave, and an 8-minute song that ends the album called "Rock is a Drug". I also enjoyed Spliff's "85555" and "Herzliechen Gluckwuensch" quite a bit, although those were more "Neue Welle" music, which there was nothing wrong with.The album goes from song to song as if you were listening to a radio broadcast, and there are some sweet jingles and commercials in there as well. The production sounds great, and I always thought it did, even in the 80s.I recently listened to this all the way through, and it's still solid.

The Radio-show never reached the USA. Sorry for the musicians... and th public. Was a great show and a great record available ( this one ! ) to going on that again and again. Feat. Reinhold Heil ( the composer from German film-maker Tom Tykwer ) and Potsch Potschka ...

I was first exposed to Spliff in 1980 while I was stationed in Germany; I noticed posters for the Spliff Radio Show Live, and eventually my curiosity led me to purchase the original CBS album. Had I known it was such an explosively fun tribute to radio, I would have caught that concert while I had a chance; to this day it remains one of my most profound regrets.Spliff was an offshoot of musicians who backed up the great Nina Hagen during her early German rock recordings; of those, "Unbehagen" is highly recommended. But this was their debut, and they chose to display their enormous talent and stylistic diversity by parodying American (and perhaps European as well) rock radio, along with DJ Rik DeLisle, at the time working for American Armed Forces Radio in Berlin (thanks Paul!). Not only do they feature dead-on versions of power pop, punk, disco, reggae, and heavy metal (among other styles), but they do it with respect, virtuoso musicianship, and ample humor. Songs extolling the 'holy trinity' of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll are interspersed with 'commercials' touting such virtues as higher learning (Wysocki College for the Totally Dumb) and air travel (Stoned Airlines to Jamaica: "Arrive with a head full of steam when you get there") as well as clever little jingles ("keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the charts" - are you listening, Casey Kasem?). In a way, it's an 80's update of "The Who Sell Out".This is a great, fun, strong record; I regret that Spliff has not done more English material. But this is a loving tribute, very well-done, to a genre that we have all made an integral part of our lives for many years. Do yourself a huge favor and buy this great CD while it's still available!

This album is just plain fun. It is rougher than their highly polished "Schwarz auf Weiss" and "85555," but a grand romp!Play it LOUD when you are working overtime.

heard this album back in high school in 82. loved the querkyness of it.still brings a smile on my face.

… Listen to SPLIFF and you’ll see the sun!!! So geht das los in der Rock-Oper Spliff Radio Show. Ein Album aus dem Jahr 1980, das seiner Zeit vielleicht um Jahrzehnte voraus war. Herwig Mitteregger, Reinhold Heil, Bernhard Potschka und der viel zu früh verstorbene Manfred Praeker, alles ehemalige Mitglieder der Nina Hagen - Band ließen ihrer Kreativität komplett freien Lauf, holten sich als Unterstützung die Sänger Alf Klimax, Lyma Russel und Lisa Biala und knallten eine Rock Oper über das Leben des imaginären Rockstars Rocko G. Fonzo in die Plattenrillen, dass es nur so schepperte. Was da rauskam war Rock, Punk, Pop, Reggae und reichlich Experimente. Meiner Ansicht nach waren Spliff nie wieder so gut. In jedem Fall ist die Spliff Radio Show, obwohl mittlerweile 37 Jahre alt, noch immer ein Meilenstein in der deutschen Musikgeschichte. Dieses Album sollte man auf jeden Fall gehört haben.Das Album beginnt mit einem Jingle und endet mit dem fast acht Minuten langen, gigantischen Rocksong -Rock Is A Drug-, den vielleicht ein Meat Loaf ähnlich gut hinbekommen kann, aber auch das nur an einem guten Tag. Dazwischen warten Radioansagen, kleine Einspieler, komplette Rhythmuswechsel und jede Menge Überraschungen auf den Hörer. Von stampfenden Beats eines -Sweet As Radio- bis hin zum punkigen -Gravy- hat diese Scheibe eine Bandbreite, die kaum glaubhaft ist. Songs wie -Gooroo- könnten von den Ramones stammen. Jive dagegen würde -Bon Jovi- gut zu Gesicht stehen. Jim Steinman hätte -Deep In The City- direkt in -Straßen in Flammen- übernehmen können. Wie Spliff später mal werden würde, kann man in -Producers- erahnen. Bevor -Rock Is A Drug- das Album pathetisch genial beendet, bringt einen -Jet Set Star- noch mal so richtig in Stimmung.Es ist vor allem auch der Einsatz der Gastsänger, die aus der Spliff Radio Show so ein hammerhartes, unglaublich gutes Album machen. Eine Geschichte mit Musik erzählen. Damit konnten schon Genesis in -Lamb Lies Down Broadway- punkten. Spliff setzten mit ihrer Radio Show Maßstäbe. Schade, dass das Album heute kaum noch jemand kennt. Falls sie in dieser Hinsicht ein Unwissender sind: Ändern sie das. So schnell wie möglich!

Bevor die Band Spliff mit diversen Hits (Das Blech usw.) bekannt wurde, legte die ehemalige Bgleitband von Nina Hagen dieses außergewöhnliche Konzeptalbum in englischer Sprache vor – damals leider weitgehend ignoriert, trotz tollem Rockpalast-Auftritt.Herausragende ironisch-sarkastische Texte, sehr gute Produktion und durchgehend tolle Mucke. Höhepunkt das Hard-Rock-Finale: "Rock is a drug".Erinnert stellenweise an Zappa der Endsiebziger oder Bands wie die Tubes.Empfehlung!

es gibt nicht mehr zu sagen, als einfach genial!!!!!! Nina Hagen war und ist nichts ohne Spliff (bzw. Nina Hagen Band) gewesen. Ein Konzept-Album, dass seiner Zeit definitiv weit voraus ist!!! Leider nicht mehr als Vinyl, bzw. nur gebraucht.........

Hatte die Platte in den 1980er Jahren mal von einem Freund auf Cassette überspielt. Ja so was gab es damals. Da ich in letzter Zeit wieder ein Faibel für Vinyl entdeckt, mir wieder einen Plattenspieler gekauft habe und auch noch ca. 100 LP's besitze, wollte ich auch diese Scheibe haben. Was soll ich sagen, die Musik kannte ich ja schon. Das Album ist von vorne bis hinten absolut geil. Zusammen mit der LP 85555 das Beste was die Jungs von Spliff jemals gemacht haben. Da es sich um eine gebrauchte Platte handelt ist der Zustand natürlich nicht wie neu. Alles aber im Rahmen.

Die LP ist in einem sehr guten Zustand und ich freue mich sehr, dass ich das Album auf Vinyl gefunden habe, ich habe es schon eine Weile gesucht.
