Grab a box of tissues
I watched this movie when I was a little kid and I cried my eyes out. Now sixty years had gone by and I did a online purchase of this movie and watched it, and darn! I forgot the tissues. HeeheeI was excited too that I got to watch it in color! Everything I watched was black and white because all we had was a black and white television. Even the Wizard of Oz movie, when I watched it for the first time on a big flat screen tv, I about jumped out of my socks when Dorothy opened the door after the house landed in Oz. I never knew what movies or shows were black and white or color. As far as the movie All Mine to Give, it’s a great movie and beautifully made.

My high school English teacher hated the word HEARTWARMING.
This is definitely NOT a version of the great documentary WISCONSIN DEATH STORY. Instead, take Patty, the adorable little doll from THE BAD SEED, still with those lovely long braids (which apparently never need to be washed and re-braided), and the wonderful Glynis Johns, and do a complete Disney-ish true-story, one that will be perfect for Christmastime. Some of the shots apparently were done from a sticky tripod head because sometimes you notice sudden annoying horizontal stick-and-slips. My favorite scene is a birthday surprise party where the kids hide in the dark silently waiting for one of their brothers to come through the front door of the little wooden cabin. When they all yell SURPRISE, about 20 megawatts of overhead stage lighting slams ON in a blinding glare like an A-bomb detonation, which I suppose was meant to indicate that someone simply lit a beeswax candle or two. Or maybe the roof blew off at high noon. (Don't you love to see candles cast shadows?) Anyway, this tear-jerker drama was well acted and has lots of good clean fun. Afterwards, watch the documentary about THE ORPHAN TRAINS and see another side of the real story. And try to absorb the idea that children could be given away without Government interference--just knock on doors and ask people if they want a cute little kid to raise. You know whether they did. Who would turn away THE BAD SEED?! McCormack in real life has given the most intelligent interviews I have ever read. And I loved LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE too. Surprise! Not.

This movie is based on actual events.
The original story was titled “ THE DAY THEY GAVE BABIES AWAY”..and was written by the son of the oldest child ( Robbie) depicted in the movie. I heard him speak on classic radio.. that is why I searched for the movie. So glad you offered the dvd. Loved it.

Review without Spoilers - Pros & Cons
All Mine to Give (British title: The Day They Gave Babies Away) (1957) is a Technicolor melodrama film directed by Allen Reisner & starring Glynis Johns, Cameron Mitchell, & Rex Thompson. The film is based on a true-life story set in Wisconsin in the mid 1800s about a couple from the Shetland Islands in Scotland & their six children. Here are the pros & cons of this film as I see it, I hope this helps you.Pros:1. A great story with great family values and what it takes to be a good man or woman2. A inspirational film about doing the right thing in tough times3. A good film for the whole familyCons:1. If you are looking for a happy Hollywood film then you might be a little disappointed, this film deals with real life, tragedy, and dealing with issues

A good, but very sad, family film.
I remember seeing this as a second feature years ago. (Remember when a typical bill at the movies were two film)? I felt so sad seeing this as a child, wondering how I would deal with losing my parents. It's a fine family film, but I wouldn't recommend it as viewing by young children.

All Mine To Give
A young Scottish immigrant couple having just got married, starting life in the wilderness of Wisconsin in the 1800's. They build a log cabin in a clearing as their home, and one by one the babies arrived until there were six of them! It's a hard life, barely scraping a living and being plagued by diseases. I saw this film years ago on tv. I was really pleased to find it on Amazon so i bought it. Well worth watching and have the hankies ready!! By the way it is in English.

I watched this on the TV many years ago and was very glad to see that I could now buy it on a DVD. Given the fact that the film is so old, I was amazed at the quality of the film, the picture quality was excellent. The story is based on fact and I expect a lot of families probably had the same story to tell if they but knew it.
