New York City SHSAT: 1,200+ Practice Questions

This is an excellent practice book, and The Tutorverse school, which issued this tutorial, with its offering of different options of preparing for SHSAT is really great. My son got prepared for his SHSAT with The Tutorverse online 14-week course in 2020, and it was very effective. He did his exam successfully. During the course he had one very intensive 3-hours session per week, and a bulk of homework for the week. They used this SHSAT Practice book and were given additional practice book for internal use. This Practice book includes a huge number of ELA exercises along with Math problems. All of them are pretty challenging and tricky, you learn to think differently with them. That’s exactly what one needs for such an exam as SHSAT. And every question in ELA section and every problem in Math section has a detailed explanation — a key answer, which makes this practice book so good. This book is just great for self preparing, but what is definitely good with a course from The Tutorverse, they set a rhythm for you. During their sessions they set polls asking questions for immediate answers. Also, students do exercises using timer with countdown like during real test. And, everyone does several practice tests which are then discussing in class.To summarize it, I would say this Practice book is really good for self preparing for SHSAT, with huge amount of ELA texts and Math problems — all with detailed explanations. But it does worth to enroll to The Tutorverse course and use this Practice book along with their other materials for preparing for the exam. Besides a deep knowledge, they have a method and train you to “feel” that speedy rhythm and give answers to tricky questions in such a tempo and in such ways you probably never did before.

As someone who works with students preparing for the SHSAT using this book, I can tell you that it is perfect for test prep. From a mathematics perspective, one of the most important things for students to do is work on practice problems. That there are so many questions to choose from makes this book so useful. Along with the number of problems is how well organized the book is. If a student wants to work on a particular topic, they can simply refer to the table of contents to find where they need to go. Lastly, I think it's important to mention how useful I find the Answer Explanations at the back of the book. I often encourage students to try some extra problems on their own if they still don't feel confident. The back of the book gives clear explanations as to why certain answers are wrong, and will sometimes explain the most efficient way to solve a problem.

Our son started studying in the summer after 7th grade. It's logically arranged, and the content is pretty close to the actual test - with one exception: ELA on the actual test is significantly more difficult. Balance this text book with the actual sample tests on the DOE website, do lots of reading, keep on track, and you're good to go. One other thing: we did three Tutorverse math workshops via Zoom in the summer, which were excellent. Score was 582, with an offer into his 1st choice school. Good luck!

My daughters used Tutorverse for SHSAT prep and the results were astounding in before and after scores! Such great teachers, books, practice exams, class and private tutors, etc. We just got our Brooklyn Tech acceptance! 1st choice and we are thrilled!

This book is really good! The math problems are great for practice because I can learn so much from it. The only thing is that the ELA is easier than the actual practice tests given in the handbooks. Other than that I have no complaints.
