Glenn Gould: A Life Off Tempo

A lovely take on Glenn Gould
It helps to have read biographies of Mr. Gould before opening the pages of this lovely graphic treatment of his life... but I'd say it's not absolutely necessary. The narrative is couched as events from Gould's life passing through his mind as he lies in a coma following the stroke that killed him; and, if you are familiar with Mr. Gould's life, you readily will recognize the episodes so beautifully portrayed in Sandrine Revel's marvelous and powerfully moving illustrations. Ms. Revel's choice of vignettes offers a comprehensive portrait of Gould's life; her depiction of his death is perfection, and left me in tears. Even if not totally familiar with the life of Glenn Gould, the reader will be drawn in to this tale of an eccentric musical genius, and may well be moved to further explore Glenn's story. I love this book and, as a pianist who greatly admires its subject, I always keep it close at hand - because it honors Mr. Gould in a unique way, and because it delights me.

A Graphic Novel - Really?
I was disappointed. I should have taken a look inside before I purchased it. I don't like this "comic book" look.
