Outstanding
One of the best books I have read in awhile. I was so unaware of the war touched these islands. The author also showed that not every soldier is bad, but war is forced upon many without a choice. The story line was great, love, hate, hope, despair, and yet goodness.

Interesting book
An interesting view of a land not in direct conflict, but never the less oppressed by the war. Enough said.

10 stars in my opinion
Not enough words to describe this fabulous story. Onto my list of favourites. I knew a lady who was one of the interred in Germany, though from the island of Jersey. She was a teenager, always said they were treated quite well but hungry for food. She could have written this story from her own memories. Thankfully she lived into her ‘90’s and was able to tell some of the stories of those times. This story will stay with me for a long time. Well written, interesting and heartbreaking too. Possibly close to true to life too.

One of my favorites from this genre
I learned so much about a particular interest of mine, the occupation during WW2 of the Channel Islands. The story was solid, well-paced. The characters were a bit unevenly developed, but the ones in the focus, by the end, really grabbed your heart. This was obviously very well-, researched. And it showed a few aspects of the war, under occupation, that you don't always see much about. The sympathetic descriptions of German soldiers who spent their whole war on Guernsey , not as evil Nazis, but as soldiers caught up in a war they didn't agree with nor necessarily see the full , horrible truth of...that was compelling. As were depictions of petty, nasty infomers among native Islanders. The running theme in many of these stories, that war makes a person do things they ordinarily would not consider (good or bad); that the life brought by occupation changed everything: morals, family and social ties, and formerly rigid ideas of enemies and friends; and finally, who can you trust? Get it wrong and it's literally a matter of life and death.

Wow! Just Wow!
I've always known of Guernsey occupation during ww2 growing up with a ww2 veteran whose families where from there in one side and on the other german. It has been over a month since I read this book, and it is still with me.Sisters in the present inherit a home in Guernsey, and while cleaning out the home, the sister from the mainland who is staying at the home discovers some information about the relatives who lived there during ww2.....this story has, amongst other things heart. It flows quite easily between the past and the present. In the present, the people trying to find out the information about the family will suddenly come up In something you are ready to dig your teeth into and you turn the page and you are back in time finding (hopefully) the answers to present day questions. While reading this, keep your mind open for every bit of info, and just enjoy this wonderful work.....The ending resolves many of the questions you may have along the way, not to give anything away...but you will walk away going...what amazing people, and I should only be that brave in life and wishing that you could only fo!low up on the present people to see that resolution!Just enjoy this amazing book, to me better than her other twp, she hit the right theme and message.

Good History
She develops characters well; it was a page turner with the escapes, intrigue, and the current love interests light fiction

Wow! Incredible book
Why has history chosen to overlook so much of the human side is WWII? My mother discouraged me from reading ‘The Diary is Anne Frank’- she had been a RN in Northern Africa during WWII and did not understand why anyone would want to read something so horrendous.I think this book should be required reading for all high schoolers. The side of humanity that is presented is bone chilling. The story is so well written and we do need to be aware of how easily our freedom can be compromised. I love the novels set in the Channel Islands and this book makes the point that not all Germans were Nazis-being in the wrong place at the wrong time anyone can be swept into evil that exists.

Wonderfully written novel.
This is a prize winner. The first few chapters were good but then I couldn't put my Kindle down. The story relating to life of "The Four on the Beach" and everything that occurred during those awful times was written so well , I literally had my knuckles in my mouth. This is my first book by Lorna Cook and I'm ready to dive into another by her. But it'll have to wait as its already after midnight . Thumbs up on this one!

Loved it!
This book kept me gripped! Partly, I guess, because I live in Guernsey, have some knowledge of the history, and could picture the scenes. I found the characters very believable, and the storyline was very engaging. People did extraordinary things during the Occupation, and I found none of the events unrealistic. I can easily forgive the author the mistake of mentioning MOTs - there is no MOT system in Guernsey, and I highly recommend this book as a great read.
