Run Catch Kiss: A Novel

I loved it....
I came to this book with a clean slate: I do not live in New York, I had never heard of Amy Sohn before reading the book and I don't know anyone who has read the book. Having said that, I thought the book was great: very funny and I liked the author's writing style. I was not in agreement with the one and two-star reviews given by the negativos/whiners out there. I would have liked it better however if Ariel was closer to, say, 27 rather than 22, which is soooo young. A person's fantasy/reality ratio is pretty skewed at that age. For example, a person's dating travails are probably more interesting if they are in their late 20's rather than their late teens (and Ariel is barely past that). I also wondered if the physical descriptions of Ariel were those of the author, even though I have nothing to go on other than her photo on the dust jacket. For example, at one point, Ariel says she has frizzzy hair and circles under her eyes (like the photo), and at another point Ariel says she looks like Carol Kane in the movie Hester Street (also kind of like the photo). In any event, I loved the book and would recommend it--maybe not to everyone, simply because of ...well, you know...but certainly to alot of people.

Boring
I barely finished this book, and I was extremely disappointed. I was looking forward to reading the novel, as I'm a huge fan of the TV show Sex in the City, and I'm a fan of the "20/30 something female looking for love" genre. But this book fell flat. Some of the events were mildly amusing, but not funny enough to warrant the length of the book. The foul language seemed [unreal] -- as though it was there more to shock the reader than anything. The sex scenes were boring. And, worst of all, there was no character development at all. Even some of the flimiest novels I've read paid some attention to giving the characters a bit of depth. The Ariel was absolutely one of the most annoying characters I've ever read about. I None of her relationships rang true. I just didn't care what happened to her. I really wouldn't reccommend this book to anyone.

Incredibly Boring
I really liked the storyline so I wanted to like this, but the writing is so incredibly stale that I had to put this down without finishing it.

Whatever people, this chick is funny!
I had read the horrible reviews and some of the good reviews online before going to my local library to check this book out. I figured I had to know what all the complaining was about. Thank goodness this isn't like Bridget Jones - that book sucked and so did the movies. I read this book in about a day and a half and thought it was freakin' hilarious! I laughed out loud numerous times. Just because Amy Sohn didn't write a longwinded book about some sappy love story between the typical single girl and some too-good-to-be-true hunk doesn't mean it's a bad book. I loved it and I can't wait to read the rest of her books.

An entertaining, quick read
I've read Amy's columns in the NY Press since the begining and have always admired her writing style; her book is a continuation and elucidation of the columns. For avid "Female Trouble" fans, the book is an interesting background of how the columns came to be. For those who have not read Sohn's columns, the book is still a wonderfully explicit and entertaining view of a young woman's experiences and thoughts.I found that I (a 35 year old male living in the same Brooklyn neighborhood as the main character)learned a bit about the female view of the world and men, so I would say that the book's audience is far wider than just 20 something women. In fact, I would urge 20 something men to read this book if they are interested in knowing what goes through the mind of the women they are dating. The book will not change your life and it isn't a literary masterpiece, but its a solid and impressive first work from an author who will hopefully continue to give us her view of the world.

great seedy writing!
Have read three of Amy Sohn's books, and while this was my least favorite out of the three, it was still a great page turner. Prospect Park West and Motherland were more my style of fiction mixed with real Brooklyn locations..Run Catch Kiss was gritty and honest in it's writing, and definatly kept me wanting more at the end!

At best, it kills time
I decided to read this book after reading a review in my university's newspaper. It described the book as "funny...entertaining...enjoyable." After reading it, I must say I disagree. It follows the life of Ariel Steiner, a young woman who gets a job writing a sex column. Her love life is less than active, so after dating a few guys, she makes things up, changes some names, and publishes them in her column. Her attempts at relationships are desperate at best. She comes off as annoying and needy. I sure can understand why no man wants to keep her around. I found the novel to be nothing more than light porn and less than funny. Your money can be spent elsewhere.

Vulgar and pointless
Wish you could grant a book zero stars! If the opening parts are supposed to draw you in by somehow combining pedophiles with hot sex, it failed. The telling of a story involving an older man and high school girl, telling her he'd written a play about sodomizing and killing a girl her age and wouldn't she like to come over to his place and read this, is presented as a TURN ON for a bunch of guys. Clearly we have laws because people have no morals and no values and no brains of their own! This book is a complete and utter waste. Stopped reading.

Light reading
My first impression on this book was "gee, the main character goes for sexual encounters way too much!" She is a columnist and is always seeking for experiences as a source for writing. As a Japanese reader, bits about New York City, where the story unfolds, are interesting. This book is light reading, but there's not much to gain.
