Mythology: Mega Collection: Classic Stories from the Greek, Celtic, Norse, Japanese, Hindu, Chinese, Mesopotamian and Egyptian Mythology

This is easy listening, and quite informative and digestible - whether you are working or relaxing. I want to give it a good-great review, but THE CHAPTERS ARE NOT LABELED>Please, please update - I think its a dramatic oversight. The sheer bulk of information in here demands greater organization.

A lot of information

Easy to follow book for a 10 year old!

Feels like lots of mistakes were made and not corrected. In the first chapter it says that Persephone's mother is Hera, when it is commonly known that her mother is Demeter. Penelope from the Odyssey is referred to as Odyssey's daughter instead of dutiful wife. In their telling of same myth it also states that he landed on Calypso's island twice, and says nothing about Cersei. I am not familiar with the other mythologys in this book, but I am well informed about Greek and Roman mythology. Starting out with so many mistakes makes me weary of how accurate this collection is too the original stories.

This was a really interesting introduction to the mythologies of several of history's most fascinating cultures.First, the narrators. Honestly, it was a little strange going back and forth between two narrators between the different mythology books. It was minimally jarring though.In both cases, the narration is skilled and the voices are pleasant to listen to. In the few cases where a character voice is needed, each one was unique and skillfully created.Okay, the important thing to understand is this book is not a 30-hour dive into one mythology. Even though there is likely enough material in EACH ONE to offer that, this is a collection of introductions to the mythologies of the ancient Greek, Celtic, Norse, Mesopotamian, Japanese, Chinese, Egyptian, and Hindu worlds.Each one is fascinating and informative in its own right, and has left me wanting to learn more.Just a couple of cautionary points.These stories, while accurate as far as I can tell, do not conform to modern sensibilities. Especially in the western mythologies, we are faced with rampant sexism, rape, incest, and other things that we might consider atrocity in the modern world but were commonplace and, in some cases, expected during their time.And while it is not excessive and only mildly jarring, there are a number of typos and incorrect word usages (such as the word "imperical" when the author clearly meant "imperial"). I would say the occurrence is limited to an average of less than one per 30-60 minutes of the audiobook.All in all, I really enjoyed this collection and I would really like to see the author expand these books to be deeper dives into the mythologies of each culture.

Note: This review is for the Audiobook version.Overall: Recommend for anyone seeking a decent overview of the listed eight mythology systems.I first read Edith Hamilton's Mythology when visiting my dad the summer before 5th grade. Since then I have enjoyed reading and learning about the mythologies of various cultures. While I am not as widely read as I might ideally like, I have touched on a goodly variety over the years and was very interested in the range covered by this audiobook. This is not really one audiobook but is instead a collection of eight distinct shorter books bundled together to provide a wide overview of non-American mythologies. Each book starts by going over some of the histories behind the development of the myths and their cultural relevance and provides an encyclopedia-like entry for the major gods or other persons of major importance. The individual books then cover a selection of myths for the culture. While not exhaustive, they provide a good overview of the cultures and myths in question and provide a wider view than typically provided in American public schooling at the very least, given its tendency to focus primarily on Greco-Roman mythology and maybe a bit of Norse or Egyptian. The end of each individual book in the collection also provides references for further study of the mythologies of that culture for those interested in deeper. Overall an enjoyable listen and one I am glad I added to my collection.Minor Cons: One point that irked me was that one of the narrators was not always consistent in his pronunciation of names (e.g. pronouncing Hera as Hee-ra and Heh-ra within the same paragraph). He also occasionally used the wrong name for a character in a myth. This was most noticeable to me in the Greek myths such as, in the course of 4 sentences, referring to the mother of Persephone as Demeter, then Hera, then Demeter again. As this is an audiobook, I am unsure if that error was by the narrator or a typo in the source material. I did not notice this type of error too many times, but it threw me when I caught it a few times. These issues were overall quite minor but may annoy particularly picky listeners.Disclaimer: This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

The narrator does an excellent job. I looked for other books he might do narrated but unfortunately they were books that did not interst me.The content of book is wonderful, makes understanding the basics of Greek mythology easier to grasp.I have listened to this over and over and never get bored.

This is a great read or listen for anyone interested in mythology. Stories are very well written & spoken. It was difficult to get through some mythologies because content was drastically different than your more common mythologies, but they were great to listen to.If you get the audible version, each new chapter is just marked as chapter #. Context is hard to remember without listening & going back to listen to specific content is not easy. That is one upgrade I would like to see.

Great introduction to the various mythologys. Further reading is required for an in depth experience but this series of books is a great start. It will let you know the basics and is a starting point to let you know if you would be interested in reading further material on the various cultures mythology. Over all this series accomplishes what it set out to do. Further proof reading would have been good as there are a couple of mistakes in the final version.
