Brilliant book - well worth reading
My son bought me the first M W Craven book for Christmas, and it took me a while to get around to reading it. However, since I first discovered Washington Poe and his sidekick Tilly, I have been gripped and can't get enough of them! I particularly like all the details the author gives about Cumbria, and the added information about the military. It all contributes to an exciting novel. I thought I had it worked out, but how wrong I was! Each book has been brilliant and I am looking forward to reading the next one now!

Loved it!
He. Did. It. Again.I am a big fan of Tilly and Poe series, and every single year I think that a given book in the series is the best and I don't know how Mike can write anything better... and then he writes even more brilliant story! And yep, he did it again."Dead Ground" is very different to the previous books. Poe and Tilly don't chase a serial killer, discovering fresh bodies, worrying that the next victim can be found any minute. This time thanks to Tilly's fantastic brain they discover that the killer has indeed killed in the past, and that he's probably about to do it again. The book starts with Tilly and Poe in the court where Tilly smashes with her intelligence the city legal representative who wants destroy Poe's house. A fantastic start that made me laugh! In "Dead Ground" we have a high level murder, which requires a collaboration with FBI agent Melody Lee again (this time in person!) and a secret British organisation...The main focus is on the crime that happened in the past, without solving it, there's no way to solve today's murder. And there are many powerful and resourceful people who don't want the sensitive topics become public. Even Tilly can't find information online, which is unusual. Someone is very good in hiding and removing the data.Whenever Tilly speaks, she makes me laugh. I am so #TeamTilly and I want more and more of her in the books! This time, the fourth instalment is a Poe story. He was the main character and he even took some steps without telling Tilly (not cool, Poe!), and thanks to his military background he noticed details that were missed by everyone else. His past experience was essential in solving the crimes.I feel like it's a new level of writing, I feel that plotting the solving a crime years after it was committed is much harder than plotting a story where fresh bodies are dropping every 50 pages giving a new evidence.Enjoyable, fantastically written and a must read for everyone.

Great book
I have really enjoyed reading M W Craven's Washington Poe books. Well written, good characters, great dialogue which is laugh out loud funny at times. He creates tense tight plots with great factually correct research. Would make a brilliant TV series.

Edgy and addictive
I adore this series and especially the teaming of Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw. Poe and Tilly are total opposites but my goodness it works so well. This is the 4th book in the series and they just keep getting better and better with each one. I would suggest that you do read these in order as the character progression and the storylines do continue through each book.Just as the relationship between Poe and Tilly is unique so is this next investigation that they have been asked to help out with. Not just any investigation, but one that tries to bind them within the red tape of the Official Secrets Act... as if! This is where reading the previous books is ideal for the character background of the characters comes in, because you will realise that both have their own way of doing things!Poe is a determined, tenacious and at times bull-headed bloke, where are Tilly is more reserved, cannot abide lies and is the tech genius in this pairing. They are called into what could be a potentially high profile murder but one that is being carefully managed.I never read the synopsis for the books in this series after I had read the first book, I just know I am going to get on with them and indeed it has been the case with each book. Going in blind works so well as the author doesn't take long before he goes from a quick what's going on with the characters to a full-blown investigation. The case is devious and calls into question a previous case, the more the team know the more they don't know. Having assistance from the FBI in the form of Special Agent Melody Lee, known from the last book, was great as did this character. She is similar to Poe in some ways. While she has her part to play in this story, the main emphasis is on the work Poe and Tilly do, the way they piece the players, the clues and the chaos together until they see the bigger picture. Obviously, this is never going to be easy when you have politicians, the Feds and are dealing with Official Secrets and the people that decide who gets to see what. It all gives a feeling of not knowing who to trust and it is this edge that makes this book so addictive, as well as the banter from Poe and Tilly of course.A brilliant 4th book in this fabulously addictive series. One for those who like a more complex case, with a deeper mystery aspect and some amazing characters. A police procedural in some ways, with conspiracy and so many secrets and one I would definitely recommend.

my first one in the series and from now on auto-buy
What a brilliant book. Found by accident, browsing through the Amazon offers. I see Poe a little bit as aJack Frost with a modern sidekick. Tilly is a wonderful assistent with her brilliant mind and Sheldon Cooper social interaction (altough she is a lot nicer) To tell the story is almost impossible because it moves at such a pace, interwoven with new characters and information. It's rare for me to be swept along by a story , not because i've gotten blasé by reading thousand and thousand of books, but the rarity of quality. I've read and still read sometimes good books on a daily basis. I've started books and literally thrown them in the recyclebin after two pages. I've started books like this one and couldn't swipe the pages fast enough, even when i was having dinner (yes i know, sue me). I'm buying every book from this man, promise. I don't get a percentage, i can only advice you to do the same, you'll be reading while having dinner too, also a promise)
