Galapagos George

Great book to add to the collection. Excellent story and illustrations!

I purchased this book for my grandson prior to our trip to the Galápagos. This is a beautifully illustrated and delightfully written book about a tortoise found on one of the Galápagos Islands which ultimately was found to be the last of his species. His story is a wonderful way to introduce the younger generation to the importance of conservation. It certainly made our visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station much more meaningful!

ガラパゴス諸島のピンタゾウガメが、１億年の時をかけて普通のリクガメからピンタゾウガメに進化し、そして人間の海洋進出によって絶滅していくまでが１冊の中に凝縮されている絵本です。　ピンタゾウガメの最後の一頭、ロンサムジョージ（2012年に死亡＝絶滅）は数々の本が出ているので、これもそんな「ひとりぼっちのジョージ」のお話だと思って読んだところ、その一番最初のご先祖様にあたるギガンテス・ジョージから始まる絵本でした。最初のギガンテス・ジョージ（女の子でした！）がどうやってガラパゴス諸島に流れ着き、そしてどうやって他の島々のカメたちと違う進化を遂げていったのかが詳細に語られていきます。時が流れるに従い、ダーウィンも登場。そして現代の研究者たちへ・・・・。壮大な時の流れを１冊で駆け巡ります。　進化とは何か？というテーマだけでなく、絶滅のファクターや、人間の営みと自然界との関わりなど、普通の絵本と同じページ数のはずなのに、実に盛りだくさんです。カメのサバイバルや進化にわくわくしていた息子（５歳）は、最後ひとりぼっちになったジョージに涙ぐんでいました。ダイナミックな絵本だと思います。

A really neat story about a special tortoise. The illustrations are great and story is wonderful. My grandson managed to stay away from his video games long enough to read this book and has come back to it again and again

My granddaughter loved it !! George was a "good ole turtle". For a 9 yr old, she is very interested in the Galapagos Islands. It was written perfectly for her level.
