A nostalgic love...
Somehow I had forgotten a lot of my love for this series in the ten year gap, but returning to the ever interesting SOS Brigade immediately returned me to a different time. This isn't the best of Haruhi Suzumiya, but it isn't the worst either. Tanigawa has a way of setting up mystery, intrigue, and everyday mysteries much like Hyoka. You can see his love for Sci-Fi and everything mystery littered throughout the pages and you tend to learn something as you go along. This doesn't give a continuation to what many would consider the main story of Haruhi, but if you like me enjoyed some of the side stories that add to the world (like Lost Island Syndrome, Snowy Mountain Syndrome, Mysterique Sign, The Day of Sagittarius) then I would say you'll enjoy this collection.I hope we don't have to wait another ten years for more Haruhi!

A Comeback With Potential
I’ve gotta say, I was thrilled to hear that Haruhi was coming back when I heard an announcement back around September 2020. I never thought the author would conclude this adventure.Interestingly enough though, the author didn’t conclude the series with this book, nor did I sense any growth in the characters.More than anything, I felt like this was a filler book.*Light Spoilers*Arguably, the antics of the SOS Brigade in any book are fillers, but this book in particular seemed to barely touch the theme I’ve been seeing since the beginning—saving the world from a problem that Haruhi already created (which I loved). Rather, this book focused on a different reoccurring theme—preventing the Haruhi problems before they happened. These are entertaining, but it’s both the preventative and fixing the Haruhi problems that make the story amazing to me. This book only focused on the preventative. As a result, the story focused more on seemingly trivial philosophical matters, because there was nothing to “fix”. Was it good? Sure. But I expected more chaos and adventure with reality distortion, time traveling, closed space, etc. I was especially excited for Tsuruya, who, being on the front cover of this book, might finally play a critical role in saving or altering the world—the earlier books hinted at this happening in my opinion. Instead, she was kind of just there the entire time unknowingly preventing Haruhi from doing anything weird in the first place, helping on the side like she always does. Not bad, but I was hoping for more development from her. Here’s the potential though: a major theme in this book was that there was a reason or hidden clue in ever story the characters read (they read a lot of stories in this story), or foreshadowing. I’m hopeful this whole book was one big foreshadow because there were some things in here that made me think, “oh boy, the conclusion to this series could be near.” I’ll explain in the next section.*SPOILERS*The whole 3rd story of Tsuruya, where she attended the conference about DNA processors. Huge foreshadowing that the current timeline is about to get into the time period where computers are not physically with people, like how Asahina and Navarro use their powers. Remember, adult Asahina from the future hadn’t seen the SOS Brigade in years prior to Kyon getting sucked into closed space with Haruhi, meaning that with the current time period getting closer to futuristic time-travel is signifying the end of adventures with at least Asahina, if not the whole SOS Brigade. The idea that Haruhi’s powers are waning, or possibly becoming more powerful on the unconscious level. That brings promise to more possible conflict in future novels. That’s about it. Fun story, not the cup of tea I was hoping for, but I’m hopeful it sets up for even cooler stories in the future!

Years too late, but it's readable.
To be honest, I didn't finish reading. One small reason why is that the other Haruhi hardcover light novels exploded in value and I didn't want to risk this one getting too damaged or worn. The other was that I wasn't very interested in what was happening. In a nutshell, Haruhi is interested in finding mysteries around the school and the crew are forced to make sure Haruhi doesn't accidentally create mysteries that end up changing the way the world works. It's been so long since I read them, but If I remember correctly the previous two books had some of the highest stakes in the entire series and even (small spoiler) end with Kyon having a vision of himself and Haruhi in college together. When I heard of a continuation, I had expectations they would start in college or right before....but instead it's a return to the status quo. I guess there is nothing inherently wrong with giving us more of the same, the series is basically a bunch of slice of life style stories, but at this point in the series, it feels a little empty. The story at one point even points out, without irony, that the crew has done this song and dance before and here they go again.I'd say that is essentially my criticism of this book and what kept me from getting as much out as I might have. If this entry had appeared four books ago, it would have been much more enjoyable. As an entry years after the conclusion of the series and for it to do basically nothing in terms of fleshing out the characters or moving the overall narrative forward, there's nothing in here that made me feel I had to read and, so, I just stopped.

Enjoyable, but esoteric
It was surprising, but welcome, to see a continuation of the Haruhi Suzumiya series after so many years. And, the content itself was interesting. I especially enjoyed the mystery elements of the third story, which comprises most of the novel. This isn't just a book for nostalgia's sake, and would fit in perfectly well with previous entries in the series. That said, it's not perfect. If one isn't already familiar with the series or the characters, this would not be a great entry point. Some dialog within the mystery section, especially within the introduction, was overly obscure and ponderous. And, nothing really "happens" -- it is more of an independent story, rather than a plot-focused continuation of the series. But, that's ok. I appreciate the novel for what it is.

Happy for the return, hopefully more on the way
Exciting to finally get a continuation to the Haruhi Suzumiya series! The brand new story that takes up most of the volume started a bit slow but ultimately was an entertaining read. I wish we got more in regards to the overall world story advancing, but I'm hopeful we'll get that much sooner than the wait for this volume.

Masterpiece!!!
Love to see Haruhi stick to form after being on Hiatus for so long. Loved all three stories especially loved "Tsuruya’s Challenge" and found the new T character very compelling and a welcome addition. The art has gotten so much better over the years. Hope to see more Haruhi in the future!

Delighted
I have no other words, other than I am wholeheartedly glad that I decided to read this series. Looking back at it now I'm annoyed at myself for putting it off for as long as I did. I will happily wait for another great installment for I have never once been disappointed.

Nagaru Tanigawa does it again
This book can't be missing in your Haruhi novels' collection. After 10 years Nagaru gives us three more stories of the SOS Brigade. Really enjoyable.
