Violets have been a favorite since ancient times, when the Greeks believed the plant symbolized fertility and love. The violet has also been used for a multitude of medicinal and cosmetic benefits, with all parts of the plant having uses. Today, there are between 400 and 500 violet species, with one of the most commonly grown being the sweet violet, a fragrant, delicate plant that blooms in late spring through early summer. Cultivating sweet violets from seeds is not difficult, but the seeds do need a period of stratification, or cooling, before they will germinate.
