An excellent read!
This is an excellent read for those who are interested in studying and majoring in Ancient Near Eastern Studies/ Assyriology. Author Marc Van de Mieroop, knows what he's talking about, after all, he is an Assyriologist who earned his Ph.D. from Yale University, so he is up in the ranks next to Professor Irving Finkel. It is definitely a reliable, solid, and credible source with references to top ranking scholars and elite academic institutions like Oxford University.

Don't spill tea on it!!!
I was in the middle of Zoom class and somehow some books randomly fell off my shelf onto my cup of English breakfast tea knocking it all over my books. I tried to mop it up as best as I could but then my Prof got mad at me because I had my video off so I tried to prop the book up over the heating vent to help it to dry better. But since the pages are shiny they kinda stuck together, and I kinda ripped them when I was separating them. I gave up so some of them are stuck together. Also the rest of the pages that didn't get stuck got warped, and my brand new beautiful book doesn't look so good anymore. But other than that the actual book itself is pretty good. It has lots of pictures and maps which are cool, although if you're not into ancient mesopotamia and the Sumerians it can be a bit dull.

Great option for a broad and general survey of the ancient near east.
If you need a broad, general, survey of the history of the ancient near east this is a great option. If you are looking for extreme detail or special treatment of a topic you have a bias for or a passionate interest in ( perhaps the ancient Israelites and biblical history ) you will need to supplement this general survey with a book specializing in the particular aspect of the ancient near east you are interested in.

wish it were available hardcover
A wonderful short yet concise examination of the history and cultural trends of the Near East. Easy to read, imaginative and scholarly at the same time. If you have the interest, this is the book.

Best one of the ancient history books I've read to ...
Exhaustive. Best one of the ancient history books I've read to date. Clear, honest explanations that are easy to follow in a complicated historical period. I'm renting it currently- may need to extend that to get the most out of it. Worth taking notes.

Informative
This book gave me exactly what I look for when I ordered it. A good survey of the history of this part of the world, with decent treatment of its interactions with those parts of the world outside it. Accurate, brief but sufficiently for to get you the picture.
